i have a disabled daughter and have been on IS and CA for the past 10 years, in this time i have never received a cold weather payment. i understand i am entitled to this and understand the restrictions attached. i would like to know how to claim, how to get proper evidence of temperatures and who to contact. is there anyone out there who has received/claimed CWP's or knows of them and knows how to go about it.

I received a CWP last year. It is based on your nearest specified place from the Met Office (I live about 13 miles from Liverpool and the place specified is on a coastal part of Liverpool, if I remember correctly - different areas will have different points). If the temperature drops below an average zero degrees for seven consecutive days at the specified point near your home, you will receive a CWP. It is paid automatically, but can take a few weeks to come through.

You may also be eligible for a Cold Weather Payment for each qualifying week if you are getting Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance in the assessment phase and have one of the following:- a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium
- a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium
- a disabled child premium
- Child Tax Credit that includes a disability or severe disability element
- a child who is under five in the family
This year you will get £25 when the average temperature where you live is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over seven consecutive days during the period from 1 November to 31 March. Specified Meteorological Office weather stations are used to obtain this information.

Early this year was the first time that I received the CWP, although I have been on IS for a shorter time than yourself. Maybe there have been no periods of seven days at an average of zero degrees, measured at the specified location for your address?0 -

There is no way to claim it,the payment is triggered by the nearest weather centre to you that the dwp uses to check if the temp has been zero degrees or below for 7 consecutive days(or nights),many people in the south of england have never had one whilst most in scotland(who qualify)have had.0 -
been on income support and disabled premiums and dla for 4 years earlier this year i got cold weather payments automatically and had never had them before. seems before this it didnt get cold enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0

My son has been on IS and HRM/HRC most of his adult life, He has never had a cold weather payment until this year, when he had two in quick succession.
For most areas of the country it just doesn;t happen unless we have a very severe winter like last time, because the weather has to go below freezing every day for 7 consecutive days.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
just read this thread and phoned the job centre with regards to CWP as I am on IS and son DLA and we have never had CWP. I was told this was an automatic payment and I would receive it if I was eligible. I asked them to double check and was asked for my NI number and was then told I was not eligible - I asked why not seeing my son was on DLA, she said they did not know my son was on DLA (there was no note of it on my record)!!! and that I am eligible for CWP afterall. moral of this story - don't take them at their word and ensure they know all of your circumstances!...
question - does this mean I can claim for past CWP that I did not receive?0 -
PS - they also said the CWP is going into the bank on 6th Jan and that one payment has been triggered - however on the government website it says that 2 payments have been triggered for my postcode.0
