Just as a matter of interest our friend states he has just got a £2500 grant for a single SET.

In case anyone thinks that you can pay out £1,500 or so and get a £2,500 grant. This is from the Government site for wind generation. this is the website our friend urges us to read:

    http://www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk/about/hfaqs/
Maximum of £1,000 per kW of installed capacity, subject to an overall maximum of £2,500 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower

So what is the claimed output of the SETs.

Even at 20mph the 40cm version gives out 100W (0.1kW)

    Even worse news,

Grants are available for more than one microgeneration technology at the same address. All new systems supported with Low Carbon Buildings Grants must deliver an output of greater than 0.5kWp for electrical installations. There is no minimum for thermal installations.

    Then:

Installations should be designed and commissioned by certified installers. If a non-certified installer carries out the installation, then the grant will not be awarded in respect of this part of the cost. A certified installer must confirm that the system has been satisfactorily installed by signing the programme completion certificate.

Then to get the grant you must have planning permission - which our friend didn't bother getting.

To be fair the SET website implies you won't get any grant. However our friend has apparently already got £2,500 for his SET. Despite it having a tiny output, costing around £1500, no planning permission, and presumably not installed by a MCS approved installer who must certify the installation.

It is only worth mentioning these points because there just might be people unwise enough to think our friend is not winding us up. Pity it is not April 1st.

Now as I apparently own a factory making solar panels(according to our friend) I better withdraw my posts casting doubts on their money saving credentials.;)

Green man - what's your normal consumption per month that you are basing your figures on?

    Micro wind turbine update

The Energy Saving Trust (EST) has undertaken the first comprehensive in-situ monitoring of domestic small-scale wind turbines in the UK. The results show that the performance of domestic wind small-scale turbines is highly dependent upon location. Disappointingly the study confirms that current micro wind turbine technology fails to deliver the results we originally hoped it would for the everyday householder living in an urban environment.
B&Q no longer sells wind turbines but is urging any customers who have previously purchased one from us and still have it attached to their home, to read the report and then contact our dedicated freephone helpline number on 0800 389 0419. It should be made clear that the wind turbines previously sold by B&Q are not faulty, the problem is that in urban environments, where wind speeds are interrupted by buildings and trees, the turbine is unable to generate as much power as was originally hoped.

... a survey by energy consultants Encraft warned that home turbines generated only a fraction of the energy promised by manufacturers, and in some cases used more electricity than they made.

The B&Q wind turbine was a propeller with a wind vane, i.e. an HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine), which at least has a chance of generating some useful electricity, if you give it decent wind speed.

He seems to claim the SET is an aerofoil design, but the SET looks more like a Savonius scoop design to me, i.e. a big anemometer.
An anemometer spins for almost any speed, so it looks like it's doing something, but actually there's not much power available. This is why you see the propeller design wind turbine everywhere.
