Tonights panorama showed a chimney wind turbine as discovered on dragons den. I have searched for information and how to buy but can't find anything. Anyone know anything about this?

I watched that inventor on dragons den, at the same time that he showed them his wind turbine he was trying to get backing for another invention, a flying bicycle.
I wonder, did that idea take off.

    50 Watts with a 20mph wind

2 watts with an 8mph wind.

Let us say you have a very good day and have an 8mph wind all day and night(which would be exceptional). so you would generate electricity to the value of 0.5p(half a penny)

Let us say you had an exceptional year and the wind blew at 8mph constantly ie 24/7 for 365 days, you would generate electricity worth a total of under £2 except the inverter would cost more than that to run. So you would use far more electricity than you generate.

    The Green bandwaggon rolls on.

Those figure though are for the 30cm turbine, the 50cm gives an output of 250watts, still not a lot but would cover most lights in the house, especially if they were modern bulbs.
I think we need to bear in mind that all these ideas are things for the future and will very probably get more efficient.
They've got to, fossil fuels aren't going to last for ever, and the price of them want come down.

  • Its always the same with these 'green' ideas, they look amazing on the outside but once someone delves just a little bit below the surface we find that they not only do not solve the problem but help to compound it.

And STILL the gov't wont wake up

The 50cm is classified as 'industrial'.

Even so with an 8mph wind it gives an output of(wait for it!) 10 Watts.

That charges a battery(which you have to buy) and then you need an inverter(which you power) to to convert to 240V AC.

The device is an expensive joke!!

It's total hype. You'll be lucky to see 5 watts in a good wind from a 30cm turbine!!

Forget about - it just isn't viable to have this sort of small turbine, it will never produce much.

There's only solar energy Electric that will work on a city based home. To get any sort of power from wind you need to be out in the countryside.
  • I tried to find this on the 'net too and found a number of articles saying these chimney type turbines could actually cause structural damage to your property

    Andy,
Thanks - 6mph is well above average.

If anyone is really interested to see just how useless wind turbines are they should read this report. A trial of loads of turbines.

    http://www.warwickwindtrials.org.uk/resources/Warwick+Wind+Trials+Final+Report+.pdf

These are not 'toy' turbines but proper jobs costing serious money.

To save you reading the detailed report this is the interesting conclusion:

The best performing turbine in the trial generated an average of 2.382 kWh per day when in operation, equivalent to 869 kWh in a full year.

The poorest site generated an average of 41Wh per day when in operation or 15 kWh per year, which is less than the energy it consumed to run the turbine’s electronics. Energy consumption averages 80Wh per day per turbine (29kWh per year) which is significant on some sites.

Many actually consumed more electricity to run their electronics than they generated!

Even the very best on top of a tower block generated 869kWh a year - except it couldn't be operated because of the noise.
