Which bank has the best online banking?

I need to change banks. I do all of my banking online so I want to open a bank account with a bank that had a good internet banking system. Who is the best?

Some points to bear in mind:

- not HSBC - they're the bank I'm leaving! However their online banking is exactly what I'm talking about - it loads quickly, it's simple to use, you can see multiple accounts in one place and transfer money instantly between them, etc.

- I'm not bothered about rewards, overdrafts etc, so please don't suggest bank accounts based on this criteria alone. Of course it'd be nice if the overdraft charges weren't OTT, or they gave me money each month for paying my wages in or whatever... but if their online banking is horrendous, I'm not interested (e.g. I've read numerous reviews that say Halifax is awful, so I don't care about their £5 a month bonus).

- not Nationwide, I have an account with them already for using overseas and their online banking is incredibly user-unfriendly.

- not Abbey (or anyone else in the Santander group, I'm guessing they'd be just as bad?), I tried opening accounts with them in the past and had such godawful experiences they ended up paying me to stop phoning them and yelling at them. I can't be bothered spending the next three years trying to set up a new account...!

Thanks!

Lame to say this, but you won't get anyone as good as HSBC.

Halifax is OK, not totally rubbish.

Lloyds is rubbish, only decent thing about it is you get texts every Friday to tell you latest transactions, but its not needed when you log on most days anyway! Their FPS wasn't working until recently, and not sure if it actually works now as it is...

    Not used anyone else.

Co-operative is good for online, i have a few accounts with them and i can instantly transfer money, check balances on all accounts on one page, see upto 50 (i think) previous statements, also can set up direct debits, pay bills and do pretty much everthing i need to online. Plus they are fab on the phone if you need to speak to someone, and i think all their call centres are uk based if that helps!

First direct is part of HSBC but prides itself on being a different bank ....But would that be different enough for you ?

It has a very good reputation
  • LTSB has 5 star security if that is important.
    Never had any problems myself.
  • Halifax are the best IMO and they have got good CS in branches and over the phone

Do you use them? I have to admit I was tempted by the £5 a month... but then, as I mentioned, I googled and found tons of reviews saying that people were unable to log in for days, or payments kept failing so they ended up getting charges or going overdrawn or whatever. I'd rather not have the £5 if that's the case!
    Yes I do

Never had any problems logging in

Only thing is their implementation of the faster payments system isn't as good as HSBC

I think only HSBC, RBS and maybe Barclays have good FP services

    My vote goes to Halifax;
-you see all accounts with a single login
    -you can make faster payments
-you can open additional accounts from within it
-transfers between Halifax a/cs are immediate
-you can setup payment dates in advance including those from esaver a/cs (most other banks only allow immediate payments from the esaver saver a/cs)
-you can make payments directly from the esaver a/c to other non-Halifax a/cs (this is limited to 3)
-you do not need OTP or card reader or such like to make/setup payments
-if you lock yourself out, you can reset your password using the online system, no need to call someone and wait for stuff to be sent out to you
-you can access and operate from outside the UK (some banks eg A&L do not allow this)
-you get £5 reward each month you put in £1000 or more

I'll look into it. The problem I'm having with HSBC is to do with their system continually messing up transaction dates on my account,

Out of interest, could you expand on this?

HSBC is best for online banking followed by First Direct which is part of HSBC.
