Car I just bought was a write-off, seller lied.

Sorry for duplicating this, but thought I should start my own thread...

I just bought a car from a private seller. He did not disclose that it is a Cat. C write off, even though I asked if it had ever been damaged, he replied 'no'.
He would not let me see the V5 document (I didn't know I should have been shown it), so I didn't sign it either. Therefore, he deceptively stopped me from seeing the special notes declaring it as a write off. He just presented me with a pre-torn off section 10 (new keeper's temporary V5). I know alarm bells should have rung, but they didn't, as I am so inexperienced with all this.
He told me he was selling the car for his son. the V5 document was returned to me by DVLA in my name - it has a Yorkshire address and the seller's address was Essex - and there was the info that it had been damaged/repaired at some point.
I am so upset that he has sold this car by deception and perhaps fraudulently. Does anyone know if I have any recourse?
I have written today to the DVLA about everything.

Many thanks for any advice.

In future you will know to do a HPI check before considering to buy a car!
  • Like I said, I am very inexperienced at the car buying game. I now know about HPIs.
I can prove that the address does not correspond with the V5 doc and I can prove that he didn't let me sign it...and if there is a signature there, it's a fraudulent one.
I am so unhappy that I was such a mug...I know I'm not the first, nor the last.
Any other helpful advice will be gratefully received :-)
  • Why didn't you pick up on the info about the damage?

It has been so well repaired, no scratches, only one which he said was from someone keying it. Some small dents, which he said were from bad parking :-(

(please don't call me a mug or anything...I've already beaten myself up about this)
    :-(
  • Why didn't you pick up on the info about the damage?

I didnt get to see the V5 until DVLA returned it to me as the new keeper.
  • So where has the info about the damage come from?

It was on the bottom front page of my new V5 doc. The first time I saw the doc was when DVLA sent me my new one. The seller didnt let me see his. He said he didnt have it on him but it was ok to just sign the tear off bit for the new keeper.

(what a !!!!py way to learn)

Contact your local Trading Standards Office. The guy may be doing this as a business. They were very helpful when my son was sold a duff scooter, supposedly new but pre reg - it broke down on the second day and we found out that it had been repaired 2 years earlier! when there was 10k on the clock. The TS people took it over and found another dozen scooters sold from same bloke, bankrupt stock he had bought. We got our money back.
  • Can anyone back up your side of this sorry tale?

My partner who was with me at the time.
