    Ok first thing first,

What make and model of mouse and are you on XP?

As a driver update maybe on the mouse's manufacturers website.

Yes, I'm on XP. It's an M56WC - no make but the installed driver says it is Synaptics It is this one here

Maybe I'm expecting too much for the price (ie for it to actually work  ;) )

Ah ha, If this is a laptop I expect the Synaptics driver is conflicting with the Cordless mouse, try disabling synaptics pointing device for a mo.

Yes have tried that too. Have uninstalled software and tried to plug and play with MS software (as some other buyers have managed to do) but still no joy. Starting to think it is a dud
