when I'm skint I use a tub of Mr S. liver pate to make a shepherds pie: just mash it all up with a fork and add loads of nuked frozen veg/fried value onions and some soy sauce or gravy under the potato crust. (Tip: according to whether you choose the tub or the 'posh' clear/silver pack, you can get exactly the same amount of the same pate for half the price in Mr S.)
When I was in Sainsbugs a few days ago, there was fresh pig's liver, decent size pack at 48pMade a gorgeous liver casserole for DH and me ( with bacon on top) that filled us up completely. Just mash some potatoes, and serve with a green veg and carrots, job done

Are any of your lot picky about the crusts on bread? If they just peel them off and leave them, cut them off before hand and use them to make breadcrumbs for bulking out other things. You can use the very end slices too for this if everyone avoids eating them. Keep them in a plastic bag in the freezer and just add to it till you want to use them.I use mine for coating fish or for adding to a tin of sardines along with the juice and a bit of marg , a quick mash with a fork and it makes pate to fill sandwiches.0

Just to say things are going ok so far. I've had a few freebies given to me by mum and the OH & DS's are both learning to enjoy and like a little less meat in their meals!
I've just been given from work a £20 voucher to use at one of my local butchers. So what I want to know is do I get £20 worth of mince or do I buy sausages as well ..... can £20 buy enough meat to last a month? What would you guys spend it on?Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning0 -
Hi Chuzzle, I'd definately buy some simnce and personally would buy a few sausages as a treat
Do you know your local butcher at all? I don't know mine persoanlly, but I do know from our previous visits that he's easy to talk to and a lovely genuine guys, not just after my money. So if it were me, I'd be open with him and say I've got to make this last a month if possible, what would he recomend.. He'll know the cost of the the cuts etc and what will give you the best value for your moneyApril 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -

Hi,
ive been trying in vain to find the '£20 to feed a family of four for a month' thread. Its listed on a thread further down regarding the only having £10 a week for food, but when i click on it it doesnt work, although the others do.
Would be grateful if someone could direct me there. I have had a flick through it in the past but want another read of it.
Thanks!0 -

Just a quick post to thank you all for such inspiration!
Made a large pan of lentil and bacon soup today;
1 full bag of 500g lentils @ 88p
4 medium size potatoes @ 10p
1 onion @ 26p
half a turnip @ 50p
4 meduim carrots @ 30p
pre-cooked bacon joint @ £2 (Worked out cheaper than buying a un-cooked one and cooking it)
Total: £4.04
