I'm gonna give it a go in lasagne first as I bet he won't notice, much less likely than in bolognaise i reckon. will let you know how it goes. I used to always put veg in my sauces too but he's not keen so i've stopped but maybe i'll start grating a carrot in again.

I have been taking more notice of YS/RTC but my local supermarkets are rubbish at savings - until today...i am so excited....breathe donna breathe...

I nipped to Mr T with a list - newspapers, beer, chorizo, bread, strawberries, tumeric, orange/lemon jellies for cake decoration, savoury eggs, lettuce, mr t weetabix, i ended up spending £32.27 but this is what i got...

Mr T finest brie and onion filo pies (2 per pack) £3.29 RTC 99p x3
    Mr T finest Steak ua poivre (serves 2) £4.99 RTC £1.50 x5
    Mr T finest rosti (serves 2) £1.99 RTC 60p x2
Organic sweet pots BOGOF £2.29 RTC 69p (BOGOF still worked!) x2
    Mr T finest deli 6x slices angus roast beef £2.25 - 45p x4
    Finest beef sandwich - £2.80 RTC 80p
    Mr T prawns £2.99 RTC £1.08
    Finest strawberries £2.99 RTC £1.39 x2

    - that shopping alone before RTC = £64.15, I paid £32.27, my original shopping list came to £13.89 so £65.15 worth of food for £18.38 well chuffed!!! that's probably more than 14 dinners and the first time in my life RTC has worked in my favour!!!

mummysaver recipes will follow once i have calmed down!

    Chilladas
~ delicious served with Tomato & Chilli Sauce (according to Delia)

8oz green or brown whole lentils
    3/4 pint hot water
    2oz butter or marg
1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped
    1 clove garlic, crushed
1 medium carrot, scraped and finely chopped
1 small green peppper, deseeded and chopped small
    1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    1/4 tsp powdered mace
    1/2 tsp mixed herbs
    2 tsp tomato puree
    salt and pepper

    Then: 1 egg, beaten
    dry fine breadcrumbs
    enough oil for shallow-frying

Wash lentils, place in saucepan with hot water and salt, bring to boil, then cover and simmer for approx 1 hr until all liquid is absorbed and lentils are mushy.

Towards end of lentils cooking time, heat butter in frying pan and soften onion, garlic and carrot for 5 mins, then add chopped pepper - cook for further 5-10 mins.

Tip lentils into a bown and mash to a pulp, mix in softened veg, cayenne, mace, herbs and tom puree, divide mixture and shape into 12 small rounds.

To cook, dip in beaten egg, then breadcrumbs, shallow fry them in a bout 5mm of groundnut oil till golden on both sides, then drain on kitchen paper and serve with sauce.

    Serves 4

    Lentil & Split Pea Loaf
(this is nice served with tom sauce or yog, or eaten hot or cold)

    6oz green or brown lentils
4oz split peas (yellow or green)
    1pint veg stock or water
    1/4 tsp thyme
    1/4 tsp marjoram
    1oz butter
1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
1/2 green pepper, deseeded and chopped
    2 carrots, scraped and chopped
    2 sticks celery, chopped
    1 fat clove garlic, crushed
    1 egg, beaten
    2 tbsp chopped parsley
    salt and pepper

    Preheat oven to mark 5/375F/190C

Bring stock or water to boiling point, stir in split peas and simmer (with lid on) for about 5 mins.

Add lentils, thyme, marjoram and simmer, covered for 25-30 mins until liquid has been absorbed and the lentils/peas are soft, then remove pan from heat

In another pan, heat butter and fry all the prepared veg and garlic until golden - approx 10 mins

Stir the mixture into the lentils with the beaten egg and parsley. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

Spoon the mixture into a well-greated 1lb loaf tin, cover with foil and bank for 40 mins. When cooked slip a knife around the inside edge and turn out on to a warmed serving place

    (serves 4)
