PC World / buying A Laptop Tips

I have not had any good experiences with this company at all.(PC World)

I bought a laptop in Jan 08 and the thing is just crumbling, Although I treat it well.

It stays on my desk constantly, I use it, I switch it off.

I have the After Sales Cover which is £8 a month.
I have utilised it several times.

1.when some of the casing fell off
2. when the keyboard just stopped working
3. When the DVD drive just failed to do anything
4. And when It fell off the desk and stopped powering up.

now today, the casing thing has fell off again..*sighs*

Last time pc wORLD tricked me into buying the cover, they claimed that when i open the box it is non refundable, also if anything happened to it the same day i would be stuck with a broken laptop.

I found out here on MSE that that was false information.

Well, I guess this thread is just for tips for when dealing with PC World.
Is the cover REALLY worth it?

I feel like selling this laptop on and buying a new one. which laptop do you advise I get for £500 max?

Which companies are better than PC World?

Thank You

Do you need a £500 laptop? What are your requirements? If you want a good aftersales policy, go with the likes of Tesco and John Lewis.

Which make of PC is it? Could you perhaps ask them (the manufacturer) to resolve the issues if PCW (as one would expect) are being so unhelpful?

Pretty much all of them – except Currys (which is owned and run by the same mob. )

The best tip (as with Sky) is to avoid having anything whatsoever to do with them.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I appreciate you have cover but bear in mind PCworld is not responsible for any of the above initially, thats down to the maker.

The cover *should* cover them but can't cover for the fact it's falling apart, thats down to the makers being cheap in manufacture, not thc cover you were sold.

You might say its the manufactures fault for shoddy workmanship, but it does seem a rather large number of complains about these products are PC World purchases, makes me think they are buying B grade and selling as new. Or they just Peeed off the Wrong ocultist that put a curse on them. both are equally likely lol.

If you wait for dell to have one of their regular special offers on you can usually get quite a good deal -for the moment £350 gets you:

    Intel® Celeron Dual Core T3000 (1.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 Cache)
    Processor
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English
    15.6" Widescreen WXGA WLED (1366 x 768) TFT Display with TrueLife™
    LCD
    Video Card
    Intel Integrated GMA 4500MHD
    3072MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x2048 + 1x1024]
    Memory
    Hard Drive
250GB (5,400rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
    Optical Devices
DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD)

which will be up to date and perfectly sufficient for most users (you can up the battery to a 6 cell -almost double capacity- for an extra £5)

    General tips:
    don't buy from PC world
    don't buy service orientated 'extras'

Depends on what policy you choose the standard is 1 week collect and return for 1 yr, Software issues like windows sucks they try to charge you, but you can get the instruction to fix yourself from here ;)
Topcashback does 6% off so use them too when you purchase your Dell.

PC World will tell you that Dell are shoddy cause they want you to buy their overpriced HP or something. Not had a hardware problem with my Dell and my Fathers 4 yr old Dell is still going strong with no defects, just slow cause its old.

Alternativly I had a samsung Monitor/tv from PCW which went up the spout within warrenty, PCW didn't want to know, told me to contact the manufacturer. Which was the better option as Samsung collected it and gave me a temporary replacement over Christmas so I could still watch the Xmas Tat, then came back with a replacement model and swapped it. I could never see PCW doing that.
