    About to buy at PC World til i read this here fred.....

    So who can recommend a decent Dell for approx 400 quid?

    I tried web site, but way too many for a novice to choose from.

    Depends what you need, speed, screen size, features etc.

    can you recommend a laptop for similar price? ideally 4 gb ram for some games.

    You need to give some more info about what you want or what you want to do with it. A 'laptop for some games' is not really sufficient.
    Fundamentally you first need to choose the screen size-though at your budget you are really looking at only the option of a 15in screen.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Having a large amount of RAM will only contribute towards games performance to a certain point, at which the bottleneck becomes the woefully underpowered graphics processor. You're better off looking for something with a better GPU and then if the need arises, add more RAM at a future date.

    The best tip for shopping at PCW is to walk past the front door not going in.

    OTOH my advent re-badge of the MSI wind is very good.
