However, I appreciate not everyone has the money or inclination to rebuild their house so it doesn't have any parallel walls.

I know some builders who are experts at building non-parallel walls :rotfl:Why buy when you can win!

The more speakers you have, the more acoustical problems you're going to have.
I don't doubt it. Though, I'm of the opinion that people would be better served by getting the basics right before spending lots of money on equipment.

I sort of look at it this way as well. We re-positioned the telly (much to my wife's horror) so that we would be looking straight at it, with the speakers at equal heights, in order that we could sit in the perfect position in the middle of the sound envelope. I know that my system has limitations, but I think it is probably positioned near its optimum. I did away with the original Sony speaker wire, and sunk better wire (QED I think) into the walls.
I have seen other expensive systems, where people hide speakers behind sofas, or put them on shelves (including the sub woofer) where they can vibrate.
As you say Marty, get the basics right, or it is a bit like spending thousands on a car's engine, and then ignoring the brakes and suspension.0 -

I cant say as ive ever seen a proper test of an optical splitter. But assuming theyre the same as coaxor hdmi splitters then it will seriously introduce 'jitter' into the mix (which can affect the sound quality if its near its digital 'cliff edge')
I seriously doubt such a cheap gizmo would be built well enough to take jitter into account:idea:0
