and these speakers ~

It wont be 'amazing', but it will certainly be a hugh step up from listening through the tvs internal speakers
Personally id be scouring ebay for some real bargains if it was me. True hifi tends to last decades:idea:0 -
Ok. Your dvd recorder and sky need 'digital' cables to get the 5.1 effect (Going into and out of your tv will make it stereo which defeats the whole object).
Okay - I understand now :cool:Digital cables come in the form of HDMIs, OPTICAL or COAXIAL. So whatever you buy MUST have these connections in (depends what the players do though.
Right, so when I have a look at the boxes, I'll make a note of what outputs they have to make sure that the amp has sufficent types / numbers of inputs. Thankyou!:TId assume the dvd recorder and wii allow digital through its HDMI, But again im not to sure)
The DVD recorder does have an HDMI connection, I think - the Wii isn't so important tbh.
Can't do away with the DVD recorder sadly - although we have Sky+ and there is freeview built into the TV, we STILL find ourselves needing the freeview in the DVD recorder as well on occasion when programs clash. Note to self: get a life.0 -
Like I said though. Sky + must use its optical. SKY HD must be optical or coaxial. It only allows stereo through HDMI (Which I find unbelieveable!).
And even though you wont be bothered about the wii, its suprising how much of a difference it can make.
For example ~ I play modern warfare 2 on my PS3 through a very good system. I can hear EXACTLY where people are when theyre running around etc, which gives me a slight edge against those that cant.:idea:0 -

I know you were replying to someone else, but please could you tell me; is a receiver only necessary to eliminate excess cabling / for making sure you have sufficient ports for all your devices?

as i said (and please dont be offended) if you really dont know much about this stuff then you will probably be happy with any old setup - ive been looking at speakers/amps for 2 years now and still havnt made my choice0

A receiver technically means its an amp with radio installed too (Although a lot of websites get this wrong and I havnt even checked so it might not technically be a receiver)
Anyways, in a way your right. Ive chosen that because ~
its a sony which are renowned for their av amplifiers
it has all the inputs required
it should even sound 'ok' in stereo (Most dont sound too good)
Whatever you buy it MUST have all the desired inputs. If you buy one that hasnt enough then you end up buying 'splitters' and the like and thats at definite deterioration to the sound:idea:0 -

A reciever will be a central control system for the "Sound".
All devices will be inputted to the reciever then outputted through the speakers decoding the sound to your requirement.

Which surrounds have you got now? If your willing to wait youd be better off buying any of the Tannoy 'arena' packages or even the KEFs:idea:0 -

Certainly not offended - and you're certainly right about what I would be happy with. I wanted to find out a bit more so that I can make the most of the little I have to spend since I'm not really buying just for me.
