  • What is this strange 'ironing' of which you speak? :D

On a more serious note, I ended up having a cry to James on the phone again. I've been trying to make my mind up on the anti-depressants thing for ages. On the one hand, I'm really struggling to have the motivation to get anything done, I keep missing lectures, my work's falling behind again and I'm living in a total pigsty. All which suggests they're a good idea. On the other hand, I don't know if they'd work, what the side-effects would be like and I'm worried about telling my family if I go on them. My dad's my next of kin so I'll have to at least tell him in case anything happened to me. And James said that in his experience, GPs are very willing to proscribe anti-depressants if you ask for them so I wouldn't feel comfy talking it over with one to get the options. I just don't know where I could get some good, impartial advice on this.

If I don't answer any replies straight away, don't worry. I'm just going to wash my pots.

Why don't you go and have a chat to your GP about it. Basically saying everything you have above and see what he/she says. We all have days when we can't be arsed and I certainly go through stages of being totally on top of things and then next min living in a pig sty where I can't be bothered.

    Evening everyone

So much has happened to you all today and if I start being specific I'm sure I'll forget someone and then cause offense.

Ironing in this house only gets done when I can be arrised and there's a good film that I want to watch; otherwise I wait until it piles up and almost presses the creases out of the clothes at the bottom!

Kayleigh, you could see your GP and stress that you'd like to consider alternatives to anti-depressants (or find out about anti-Ds fully). I've had a few different ones and they've usually started on low doses, increasing them until the start to work. Talk over your concerns with the doctor cos they don't want to prescribe drugs that aren't going to be taken. They don't tend to prescribe the addictive mindbending drugs anymore :(

Kayleigh, as you know I've been on lots of different anti depressants. I agree that the symptoms you describe sound like the effects of depression, I certainly recognise them (I'm still grateful to Becky and Linda!).

They'll start you off on a low dose and gradually increase it if you need it. Any side effects usually show up quickly, so you can easily move onto a different kind. Side effects I've had varied from an allergic reaction (REALLY annoying rash!) to feeling absolutely awful - severe constipation, headaches and things. I've only had side effects from two types though, out of at least half a dozen that I've been on. Don't let side effects put you off, they're rare and you can easily change.

You don't need to tell your dad. My dad's my next of kin and hasn't got a clue what I'm on! Besides, for him to be any use he'd need to know the exact type and dosage of the pills, and it'll be quicker for them to look up your medical records than ask him anyway. I'm assuming you mean if you have an accident or something and they need to know what you're on? Otherwise I can't see what could happen that he'd need to know for.

I'm not a fan of them dishing pills out to anyone, but I think that if it's impacting on your life then it's something you need to consider seriously. It's like everything, horror stories hit the news, but that's a tiny minority of cases, for most people they're a lifeline, sometimes literally.

It is worth talking to your GP, they're not going to just throw pills at you if it's not what you want or what's best for you. Yes, you're more likely to get pills than counselling, because there aren't enough resources, but you're not going to get any treatment unless they think it's for the best.

Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
