Moving home - BT line, no number, want Sky Talk / Broadband

We're just about to move into a house which has a BT line installed. The current owners are taking their number with them. We want to go with the Sky Talk / broadband / TV package. Do we need to get a phone number from BT before we go to Sky or can Sky give us a new phone number?
(We're currently living in rented accomodation after living in Jersey for a while so a bit out of touch!)
Thanks

Like all the other line providers now in the market, Sky could do what you want. Whether they will or not is another matter though (it's likely to cost them money to take over the line and they don't like that).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

I've been having an absolute nightmare with Sky recently! We moved 2 weeks ago and had TV, line rental, calls, broadband all with sky. Told them I wanted to move it all, and no problem.
Moved into the new house, was told to get the line activated by BT on their option 1, basic pack with no contract so I did. Told Sky the number, they then say that they have such a back log that they wont be able to do the line rental and calls for 3 months! As for the broadband, they tell me I'm so far away from the exchange I can only get 2mbps and cannot have the 'medium' package I had before which cost £5 a month, I need 'sky connect' for £17 a month!!! The stupid thing is, I've moved only a few houses down from where I was living before!!!!!!
I'm staying with sky just for the HD tv now, their service is an absolute joke for telecommunications!:T If you don't have anything sensible to say, don't say it! :T0 -
Sounds to me more like they are now full for LLU on your exchange, therefore they've offered you the non-LLU package instead, which is always much more expensive. It's nothing to do with location or speed,, you could have an LLU package on 256Mb and it would still be LLU.No free lunch, and no free laptop

No contract? Dream on. You will have committed to a 12 month contract with BT (cannot be avoided).sandford6016 wrote: »I've been having an absolute nightmare with Sky recently! Ypaymore has a good track record with questions of this sort.

Taken from BT website:
Unlimited Weekend Plan
No minimum term, unless you order a new phone line or switch to us from another provider, where a 12 month contract applies to line rental.
Therefore, no contract as I hadn't switched and it wasn't a new line.:T If you don't have anything sensible to say, don't say it! :T0 -

Getting what you describe as a 'line activated activated by BT' = a new line and a 12 month contract for line rental.
Sky should have offered to activate the line at your address if you wanted to pay line rental to them instead of BT Retail.

Unfortunately incorrect again! Got the email to prove it!!! All they do is 'switch' is on, as the previous occupant of the house closed their account the day they left, leaving a dial tone, but when dialing a number it would not connect.:T If you don't have anything sensible to say, don't say it! :T0 -

What you are describing is called a 'Takeover' not a line activation.
For years, BT had a minimum term on takeovers of 3 months and then due to what they saw as abuse of the system by other operators - changed it to 12 months.

You're reading that wrong. Even just moving house and taking over the previous occupant's BT line means a new 12 month contract for line rental (unavoidably) starts. You will be charged for breach of contract if you do not remain with BT for line rental for the full term.sandford6016 wrote: »Taken from BT website:
