Taxpayer funds familys £1,600 per week rent - The Times

What infuriates me the most is this
That’s looks like a scam to me….It is understood that the house was previously rented out at £800 per week — considered by estate agents in the area as the going rate for similar properties. It is unclear why the taxpayer is having to pay twice that rate.
Anyone involved in this should be investigated & disciplined.

This family is getting over £82,000 per year (in unearned income). I would constitute that as being rich.
To be fair, it's the landlord who's getting most of money and getting 'rich'.. ( even if they are now in receivership ).. not actually the family getting £1600 cash a week in their hands. Let try not to forget that as it seems to be getting lost in amongst the noise in this thread.
Still seems such an unbelievable story though...what kind of council allocates luxury housing like this when millions of others have to make do, or do without at all ??? Beggars belief..It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

Yep, if £800 is the true fair market rent, it's an outright fraud. They should be investigating both the landlord and the council worker who approved it.0 -

Graham.....you're being played by the Tory press. Does the press run continous stories about rich tax dodging toffs who live in their Mansions at the expense of the tax payer? No, of course not, because that's not in their in their interests. It's divide and rule. They feed you a diet of benefit bashing stories and you lap it up.
But if you want to remain deluded, please yourself. Nobody ever got anywhere being blinkered imho.
Fight amongst yourselves. I'm sure the rich are laughing their heads off.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Yes, the Royal Family do get quite a bit of coverage.0 -
Why on earth do they need 6 bedrooms plus an overspill flat?
Surely the children could share a bedrooms plus one for the parents (as Carolt said), maybe more than 2 children to a room if it is big enough.
My mum grew up in a 3 bedroom council house.....there was 11 kids plus my grandparents and they coped. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Sue its not clear if any of the children or the parents have disabilities?
I think that we all know that in order to "accept HB" the LL will ask a premuim.
The family are blamed for this and they to be fair will have had v little to do with the process. It will have been decided between officers at the LG and they will try t ofind somewhere that will take this family. There are all manner of houses in London- both rich & poor- that will not accept children.
I totally agree carol, lower the ceiling and prices will fall.
This government has never been on the side of the taxpayer- I dont think they know VFM if it punched them in the face. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

That's fraud. there is no entitlement to anything more than a fair market rent. There's absolutely no case for wanting a premium to accept it - when paid direct it's the surest guarantee of a regular rent payment there is.The family are blamed for this and they to be fair will have had v little to do with the process. Pretty sure some manilla envelopes will have played a part in their decision process in this case.0
