Damaged Doors From Wickes - No Receipt!

Hello all
On Friday my I bought 4 sliding doors from Wickes. 2 were possibly too big so I confirmed that it was ok to return them for smaller ones should this be the case. It was and today I returned 2 and took 2 smaller ones. I was issued a new reciept for the exchange but they did not give me the original reciept back and I did not think to ask. When I got home one of the larger doors I had originally purchased was unwrapped and found to be damaged and I now have no receipt to return with it as Wickes still have it. (I doubt they will admit to it!)
Can I still return the door for an exchange? I am so annoyed as the 2 smaller ones are also damaged and need exchanging but I have a receipt for those!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are there any laws I should quote? I know from experience that Wickes don't like exchanging anything and the staff in ours are most unhelpful and disinterested!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Unfortunately you will need some sort of proof of purchase. Does the new receipt make reference to the original receipt at all?

    Did you pay by card?

    how did you pay?

if by card your bank statement(print a summary one off in your bramch) will serve as proof of purchase. if by cash, you can ask them to look on the system, (make up that you want a second copy for vat purposes or something) you will need to know the date and a time accurate to the hour i would have thought.

no laws really, you need to provide proof of purchase
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • I paid by debit card but I checked on the intenet and its not gone out of my account yet so can't prove anything yet.
The new reciept only shows the exchange of the doors and some wood I bought at the same time. No reference to the 2 other doors or anything else I bought on Friday!
I am so annoyed not just at this but the fact that 3 out of 4 doors are damaged!!!
  • Thanks so much for the advice. I think I will have to wait until the bank statement shows it. Hopefully they will accept this, they are a nightmare in my local branch.
Can they argue about it as I've unwrapped the doors? I had to or I wouldn't have seen the damage!

I would make them aware of the situation straight away, as the longer you leave it, the more likely they are to accuse you of causing the damage.

When you did the exchange did they take your details? I know B and Q do and keep a note of you name address and original pourchase details such as receipt number.
  • Ahhhh didn't think of that! They did take my details so may have put the original receipt number on the system.
We didn't open the doors until after 4 today so couldn't advise them straight away. They open at 7 tomorrow so I will have to go there.
Hmmmm - they obviously don't take care of their stock, 3 broken doors out of 4 and they are all dirty inside too!
  • I know with Wickes that when they process an exchange or a refund, they tap in the receipt details and pull up the purchase on their system. Either get them to pull off the details for you (though they don't have to) or, the transaction will probably show on your account tomorrow so nip a statement copy from the branch to them.

I wouldn't worry too much about the damage and the packaging - your story sounds worthy to me and I for one also know that Wickes has a quite a few problems with damaged items - you only have to look at some of their planed timber products!

I think the OP's point is that they do not seem to be bothered about the state of the goods they put out on the floor which I would agreed with - you need to scrutinise wood products from them.
