Ive often used granulated sugar instead of caster, never found much difference to be honest.:) & agree with Jackie, brown would add more flavour

    Hi all!
Thanks for all the replies, I went for a mixture of half and half granulated and brown in the end as I had even less caster than I thought - a tiny little sprinkle left in the bag!

I crushed up the granulated and then went half and half with that and soft brown, didn't want to use too much as wanted it 'cakey' rather than 'gooey' - it's out of the oven now and looks AMAZING so thanks for all the help!

    xx

  • Hi, I've suggested to dd that we make some flapjacks because she's bored and hungry! All the recipes I've seen say brown sugar but I only have golden caster sugar and splenda! I don't want to have to go and buy brown sugar so would a mix of caster and splenda work?

    Thanks in advance!

Caster sugar is fine - its what I use in flapjack all the time. I wouldn't bother with splenda. :-)

Brown will give a darker colour and more flavour, but white sugar will be fine :)

Is splenda a type of artificial sweetener? I'd avoid using that ;)

I use whatever sugar I have to hand and it's usually never caster sugar :D

Does the splenda say suitable for baking? If so then I'd probably use it.

I'd use the caster sugar, maybe a slightly different texture will result though (something tells me harder but not sure why I think that!). I would avoid Splenda- yuck!

I`ve always just used ordinary granulated white sugar and never had any complaints. Wouldn`t use splenda though.

I understand some peoples reluctance to use artificial sweeteners, so don't all shout at me when I say this... My Dad is diabetic and splenda is recommended for use in a diabetic diet so every now and again I bake him treats using it. He had a very sweet tooth before and misses his baked goods, they have some good recipes on their website http://www.splenda.co.uk/recipes/snacks they also have advice about baking with it, it's all a matter or personal taste, I don't use it very often but I find that using it in baking is very successful.
