Identify Theft at Tesco Store

Come to think of it, my card didn't work in Tesco the other week... The cashier just swiped it and I think I entered PIN in reader as normal. Then, a bit after that, it didn't work in Mc Donalds either - but they made me sign for it though?!
BTW, for transactions under £10, the merchant technically does not need you to enter a PIN...The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

Tesco tills have 2 chip readers. One on the pin pad where you put it in yourself, and one on the card swipe attached to the till, just for use incase there is a problem with the pin pad reading your card.0

If your card is compromised it is impossible to know how and where it was done.
Common sense alone would say that if it didn't work in Tesco they it had been "got at" previously. Was there any actual fraudulent activity ? If not, it is quite likely that you damaged the card yourself.
I mainly use my debit card for supermarket shopping, the previous time it was used was at an ASDA store where I inserted and took it out of the machine and there was no problem.
I am always careful where I use my card, I pay cash for petrol having had my credit card cloned previously at a petrol station.
I could not have damaged the card myself, it was safely in my wallet and was a fairly new card due to expiry of the old card.
I had no problem with the card or PIN until the I used the Tesco chip and PIN.0 -

You mean that you first became aware of a problem when using the tesco chip and pin. The problem could have occurred any time from the last time you used it.
When you had your card cloned in the petrol station, did a problem arise immediately then? Or did it take some time for you to find out the card had been cloned?0 -
If it didnt work in tescos, logic dictates something happened before tescos. if you get that poor girl fired you are a horrible person. I hope I never have to deal with someone as closed minded as you.New to Comps!Wins so Far: None0

we have had 3 or 4 different friends and family have this happen to over the past year, each time they have been told by their bank or the police that crooks are using a gadget similar to a mobile phone which can intercept the details including a pin. The police said if you see someone looking like they are on the phone near you wait until they have moved as you cant be to sure.0

If I went to Tesco and was told my pin was locked and then my bank told me it wasn't locked, I would also be concerned. Why are Tesco staff above suspicion?
And do you really think calling the OP a 'horrible person' is helping the debate? There could have been a problem with the staff member or not, but if the OP is worried they certainly have the right to query it! I've never had my details stolen or my card used fraudulently but I can imagine it is a very upsetting experience - OP, I hope you are able to work this problem out.
Edit: Ahhh, just checked janceyb's other posts - you are a Tesco employee, which answers my question as to why you think Tesco employees are beyond suspicion!! lol0 -

Concerned is fair enough, but would you then publicly accuse the Tesco member of staff of stealing your card details and passing them to a crook who used them on the internet? Why are Tesco staff above suspicion?
It not a case of Tesco staff being above suspicion, more a case of the timings being all wrong.
The OP says the Tesco member of staff stole her card details, immediately passed them to someone who was sitting in the carpark with a laptop, and that person immediately went on the internet and used the card details.
This is not how it usually happens, it can be weeks after your details are stolen before they are used. Most times the people who steal it, sell it to others and never use it them selves, this takes time. Even when they do use it themselves they wait, to give you time to use it in other places so you can't be sure which place stole it.
All that has happened is the card was used fraudulently on the internet on the same day the OP used the card in Tesco. Now the OP is convinced it was tesco staff just because they swiped it differently. In a way that has been explained to be perfectly normal and above board.0 -
[iQUOTE=Ann S;discussion/2112765]On Thurday 27th November I visited our local Tesco store at Leatherhead, Surrey. I purchased some groceries which I put in a basket.
I went to the kiosk checkout and put my debit card in the machine entered what I know was the correct PIN and this was rejected as 'incorrect PIN', I tried again and it came back rejected as 'incorrect PIN'.
The assistant then commented that this had been happening to quite a few customers during the day and asked me to give her my card so she could swipe it before trying again. She then handed me back my card and asked me to insert my card in the machine for me to try again. The PIN was again rejected and locked.
I paid the bill in cash and left the store not thinking any more about it and called the bank when I returned home. The bank advised me that my PIN was not locked and for me to carry on using the card.
The following day I visited another retail outlet and inserted my card in their machine. The card was rejected and the transaction unauthorised.
I called the bank again when I arrived home and was advised that a security alert had been put on my account due to unusual activity and my card was used at 3 pm on the day I had a problem at the Tesco store. There had also been other activity where my card had been used on the internet.
I had not had a problem before using my card at Tesco and had not used my card for a week before using it at Tesco.
I now have no faith in Tesco security and I am surprised that this could happen in one of their stores.
I do not expect to be a victim of identify theft when innocently doing my shopping at a Tesco store.
I have written to the store manager with a copy to Sir Terry Leahy.[/QUOTE]0 -
