From what I've read I don't believe that your card was 'skimmed' at Tesco - it could have happened at any time prior to your visit there - when a card is 'skimmed' it doesn't mean your card becomes immediately inactive, this can take some time and you carry on using your card totally unaware that the 'skimming' has taken place.

thats what i was trying to say:rotfl:

We were obviously typing at the same time - I must be slower than you haha x
  • My correct pin got rejected at tesco on friday am though I live at the other end of the country *goes to check account*
  • I had over £1,000 taken from my account this month. All internet transactions. Tesco did call me previoulsy to say that there had been some transactions on my card that they wanted to query, but these were ligit. However, after accessing Internet banking a couple of days later...............my heart sank :(
Got some of the money refunded and still pursuing £200.
  • no unusual activity on my account as yet, but still seems a bit strange that the 'incorrect pin' thing is happening to others at tesco! Bank say its just coincidence and could be the bank card chip starting to fail. Might change my pin and hope that helps, but still worried really 'cos it seems weird!
If you don't have something nice to say don't bother saying anything at all.

or it could have been a glitch in Tesco's electronic systems
  • I do hope so! would changing your pin help if skimming had taken place?

The only reason to swipe the card would be to provide a slip to sign (where I work anyway), that did not happen. Can't see staff member doing something so obvious and so traceable, but still find it a bit strange that she swiped the card and then asked for the pin to be retried, surely she would not normally get anymore information out of that?

Did you use your card in a restaurant before where it was out of your sight for any length of time? Have you used it on the net?

IF the only possibility was Tesco (which I doubt) then I would have been down there PDQ complete with receipt informing the manager of my suspicions and only then would I have written to Mr T.

The bits to swipe the card in Tesco have a chip and pin reader at the bottom. It used to be the case that you went to put your card into the chip and pin reader and they snapped at you and said they had to put it into theres and you just used the reader to enter the PIN. Think they eventually realised that they were going against what every other shop did and what banks were telling customers so changed it so you could put it in yourself.

So it might not have been that she was swiping it (the magnetic strip knows the card has a chip so will tell the till to ignore it and use the chip.) just to use the other Chip and PIN reader.

I know when I worked in Sainsburys we sometimes used to do this if there were problems getting the machine to read the chip.

You don't even have to use your card to run the risk of fraud on it. There have been several cases of bank staff selling customer/account details.
If your card is compromised it is impossible to know how and where it was done.
Common sense alone would say that if it didn't work in Tesco they it had been "got at" previously. Was there any actual fraudulent activity ? If not, it is quite likely that you damaged the card yourself.
  • I very much doubt the Tesco worker has done anything to your card. They swipe the cards though the till if you are having problems with the chip and pin machine, This is in case there is a problem with your cards chip not being read correctly in the machine.

My thoughts was a skimming machine was a black box, never seen one in the shape of a Tesco till  Lets hope your letter does not make them interagote the poor cashier too much :rotfl:
