Christmas Pressies...might be taking Martin at his word!

well Christmas isn't too far away and Martin has started his no unnecessary Christmas pressie campaign again - and it looks like our house will be Martin's idea of Heaven.
DS (17) can't tell us what he wants, OH doesn't want anything and I would like something (if only to open!) but don't know what I want!
I know that its silly to buy things just for the sake of buying something but at this rate Christmas morning is going to be a non-event!

Presents don't make Christmas.
Not having loads of presents doesn't make it a non event.
Maybe think of one thing at least that you'd each like to open."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Have a look at the Christmas board for some wacky ideas
Like "who can buy the most things for £1" etc
We btw have the same problem - think husband is getting a new alarm clock... woooo :rotfl:DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -
but why buy a load of tat at £1 just for the sake of opening a present? I'm turning more and more into a scrooge as the years go on, I have a very small family, parents and a brother who has two small kids, christmas turns into present overload, last year brother actually asked his wife's sister to take away some of the presents.
It's a day - one day - it's overhyped by the media - must buy presents, must have the prefect christmas.
Go alternative - don't bother with it - if there is something that you really want then ask for it. Christmas morning - spend it with your family, not having a frantic rip open of stuff that you neither want nor like!0 -
The problem is, I have expensive tastes. So when people ask what I really want for Christmas, it tends not to fall into their price ranges. If I want that £90 digital radio, and my nearest and dearest can only afford £20, we get a bit stuck. I don't mean to sound greedy (honest) just that most of the stuff I really want is stuff I can't afford to get myself, and no-one else can afford to buy me. Doesn't mean I don't want any prezzies though. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
mrcow - don't get me wrong, I know pressies don't make Christmas (sorry if I gave that impression!).
To be honest there isn't anything that we are desparately hoping to open on Christmas morning - OH has specifically said he doesn't want anything!
I know we'd be happy with a token gift but even that's proving difficult without it being a gift for the sake of a gift!2014 Target;

Why not get each other something as an 'experience' rather than a 'gift'? i.e if there's something you've both wanted to do, why not plan to do that?
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0 -
or why not write little gift cards to each other - I promise I will do your ironing throughout the whole of January type of thing? Or if you want a DAB radio, but it as a joint present rather than a gift from him to you?
means more than the tat!0 -
a good mate did a food basket last year- nothing special, but a very nice thought- and every tin was individually wrapped !
along with stuff for the store cupboard, there were odd things like pot noodle (limited edition flavour?), giant sweets, cans of (crikey!) strong beer, etc..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
my mother does that for my brother and myself - and has done for years! She goes the whole way, we never know (and belive me my mother is kind of weird!) what the hell is going to be in that hamper - and it's always nice - and very special - as my mother she knows me better than anyone, she spends hours (according to my father) scouring shops for weird stuff, I like american food, brother was in the merchant navy so anything with a foreign label is good enough for her, but it is a very special thing that means so much to me, so that is a wonderful idea.0

so why not ask for a voucher from a particular shop then maybe you could get something expensive .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
