Does O2 router need to be connected to PC?

Hi,

We have moved into a new house this week, and while we can't yet get our broadband set up as the phone line is not yet active, we are trying to work out how we want things set up (ie where to put computer desk)...

Ideally we would like the main desktop PC which we hardly use located upstairs in the spare room, but there is no phone socket upstairs.

We know we are going to go with o2 broadband, but do not want to rack up a long call to CS on our mobile to ask this, so hoped somebody here would help...

Can we set the router up downstairs but not connected to a computer, and have the computer upstairs... or is this not possible? Otherwise we will need to get a new phone socket...

Thanks in advance!

No,it doesn't need to be connected to the PC. Provided you have a wireless-enabled PC, or a wireless dongle attached to the PC.

get an O2 sim - top it up by £40 a year (£10 every 3 months) and you will get a £60 discount on your bill - plus calls to their helpline will be free

    also get cashback from quidco

Firstly, only sign up with O2 if you can get the LLU service, as O2 Access service is dreadful.

You can use the O2 router to connect wirelessly (assuming you have a wireless adapter on your PC), but to make the inital connection you will need to use ethernet-so set it up downstairs first, and once you have the wireless working, move it upstairs. The alternative is to use a long phone extension cable temporarily to make the initial connection.

I would have agreed with you a week ago.
Now my home access has improved beyond belief, and also there were only two or three competitors worth considering instead, so I would rate o2 as as good as any non LLU provider now.

It's good to hear that O2 have at long last apparently improved Access. Always remember thought that O2 have a 12 moth initial contract and that speeds can go down as well as up (which has certainly been the case with the rollercoaster that is O2 Access).
