Could you please advise how I would do this?

If it's a modem/router, the settings are usually entered in the router configuration page; something like DNS configuration or settings. Enter dns details as per ISP instructions.

Go to a command prompt (start >programs >accesories >command prompt).
    Type ipconfig /all

Post here what if anything it says for Ip address, default gateway, dns server, and dhcp enabled.

-ethernet adapter local area connection:dhcp enabled:yes

    -punnel adapter isapap:dhcp enabled:no

That is definately saying nothing is connected.
    We just need to confirm:
    1. Laptop and router are both on.
    2. The network cable is plugged into the laptop here (the one with the 3 squares)
    3. The network cable is plugged into the router here (the one on the left with the three squares.
    4. both cables are plugged in until they click.
    5. Do any lights come on next to either connector.
    6. Does the Ethernet light on the front of the router come on.
    7. Have you tried turning the router off and on.

Sorry if some of this is obvious, but sometimes the simple things get missed.

If it saying that network cable unplugged then there is a problem in one of these areas:

    > network port on the laptop
    > network cable
    > network port on the modem.

on the network port of the laptop there should be two little lights at the top of the port normally one either side of the indent of the port. if they are not on then the problem lies with one of the three above.

The specs say its got 4 ports , trying switching between ports on your modem.

I still think, in addition, and esp. because of the above, we need to know what your existing dns settings are in your router's config page.

They can't check that at the moment as they have no connection to the router from the laptop and no other PC's to test it with.

    1 - 4 are complete.
5 - there are no lights
6 - This light is on
7 - Yes turned it off time and time again

There sin't two such lights on the laptops?

I've spoken to Pc World and they say something about Media Spate and the fact that it should be connected but its not. Pipex my internet provider have all said the same and can't seem to help.
