New Laptop won't connect to Net - Help needed

I've recently bought an Advent Roma 1000 Laptop with windows 7 operating system. I am not planning on using a wireless connection yet and currently using speedtouch 510 router made by thomson. I am not able to connect to the internet, so we were advised that ethernet cable may be faulty but have now confirmed this is not the problem. I was advised to go into the command prompt and found out that ethernet adapter Lan was disconnected. I really need to get this working and would really appreciate any advice you may be able to offer?

how did you confirm that the cable was not faulty?

Also the cable could be a crossover cable in which the cables inside are crossed over for connecting network devices to over network devices. you would need a straight through cable . to confirm this take both ends of the cables and compare the order of the colour cables . if they are both the same then it is indeed and straight through if they are in a different order then its a crossover.

Some newer laptops have some fancy software that will disable the onboard LAN if Wireless is turned on, esp when on battery. Is there a switch. button or hotkey sequence to turn off the wireless?

When you go into Device Manager, Network Adapters, do you see any error messages or exclamation marks?

Hi Thanks for the responses, I really appreciated you taking the time to help.

I took the cabel back to Pc World who advised it was fine.
Having compared the cable they are the same so it must be a straight through cable.

I don't seem to be able to find any button to put it right.

I just checked and theres no error messages or exclaimation marks!

    Anymore ideas?

I think we need more info. Your ISP provides you with details of your user name and password and also DNS settings; have they been input correctly?

Can we assume the speedtouch was working before?
Do you have other PCs/Laptops connected to it?
If so are they connected with a cable or wirelessly?
Are they connecting to the internet okay?

On your new Laptop is the ethernet adapter enabled?
Click the Start, click Control Panel, and in the search box, type adapter.
Under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Enable.

Have you tried the Windows 7 network troubleshooter?

    Have you tried connecting wirelessly?
As above, in Network Connections first disable the Ethernet Connection then enable the wireless Connection. You'll need the router's wifi passkey if it has security enabled.

The user name was entered correctly.

The speedtouch was working previously 2 weeks ago when last connected to the old pc. Old Pc is broken so cannot check any other device other than new lappy.

Just tried going through the options to enable and when I go there
is enabled already, however says network cable unplugged and has a red cross. Cable is plugged in though.

Haven't tried connecting wirelessly as I don't have a router, is it worth going out and buying a router?

I just want to add that I am actually writing this on behalf of my brother who is providing me with the information by phone but I will continue to proceed with 'I'

DNS settings also correct? Proxy settings un-ticked?
