Problem with Xbox live. Is it my router?

one way I found to comprehensivley test was using a freeware program to repetedly run ping tests (http://www.pingtester.net/). If you set it to run on your PC whilst your gaming and ping a) to your router at 192.168.0.1 or whatever and b) to a couple of reliable internet sites -i used www.google.co.uk and www.bbc.co.uk you'll be able to tell if the problem is with your internet connection to your ISP or locally from your router to your xbox
with me i could see the ping to my (ISP provided and configured) router being very stable but pings to anything on the outside world dropping out regularly at exactly the same time I was havign gaming problems. sent the log to my ISP and it was promptly fixed
you can do the sam thing with cmd & ping by typing 'ping https://www.bbc.co.uk -t' (without quotes) into a command prompt window0 -

yup, but I found it awkward to repetedly type that out 3 times to ping 3 different locations every 0.6s (600 milliseconds) in the background whilst playing online games at the same time to see if any network dropouts co-incided with gaming disconnections
Edit: gave quite a conclusive result too, if you see something like this (yellow marked section) exactly when your game's dropping out its a problem with your connection not the stuff in your house (note ping to router stays ok but everything in the outside world goes completly):

Thanks for suggestion regarding ping test, i will try tonight.
I take it you mean play on XBL while running test and not computer online game. i dont play online games except my son plays the odd flash games.0 -
Hi stulaunch,
Does the router drop the connection after a specified length of time?
I had something very similar (with the same router IIRC) and I had something set to 60 which disconnected after 60 mins (not good when playing a game online). I will have a look for a manual online for the router but the setting was something like "idle timeout".
I think I also had to put the mac address of the xbox into the DMZ onto the router.

I'm not that familiar with XBL, but yes -run whatever it is that needs the constant internet connection on the xbox and keeps dropping out. At the same time run the test from your PC (as you're testing the connection upstream of your router back to the ISP makes no odds that the game/XBL stuff isnt being done on the same machine thats ping testing).
if you do see the connection to the ISP dropping the problem lies either with the router or back up to the ISP (eg your in house telephone wiring, BTs wiring or the 'profile' your ISP has setup for your connection at the exchange) if the connection remains good when it drops problem is either/between the router and xbox0 -
HI Stulaunch,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
Are you still experiencing problems with your Xbox live connection? If so could you please register and post at https://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums in the connection and stability section. We'll then be able to take a look at your line stats and see if a profile change is needed and run through some testing to resolve the issue.
Its worth checking your router is set to always on (sometimes called nailed up, sometimes idle time - 0 dependant on the router). Your MTU should be set to 1432 or 1400 too.
Cheers
