Problem with Xbox live. Is it my router?

I dont seem to be able to run xbox live without it disconnecting while playing.
I have Netgear DG834G and could not connect when i moved Xbox upstairs, so i bought cable to ethernet cable to connect when i'm on it thinking this would sort out dropping out problem. But no still does it.
Do you think its a problem with my router? If so can anyone suggest replacement but not too expensive, or is there anything i can do to make better connection?
My router work fine with computer and other Laptops in house, no dropping out of connections

i'm guessing that it's a port forwarding issue. try this:

Correct! Click 192.168.0.1 and allow gaming mode to be activated.Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'
Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!
Also, thank you to people who help me out.0 -
Gosh ive had a read of that and sounds too complicated for me.
Dont suppose there's an easyier guide anywhere is there?0 -
Ok at last i got round to doing the port forwarding, but i still have same disconnecting problems, it just keeps droppig out of XBL whilst playing.
Am i now right in thinking it must be something wrong with modem or maybe a problem with internal cabling?
Only thing is i have no dissconnection issues with my PC which is connected through the same wireless Router, Netgear DG834G.
Any other things i could try?0 -
Still cant stop Xbox live from disconnecting me, i'm going to try a new modem.
Can anybody recommend a good wireless adsl modem that works well with Xbox live, not to expensive though.
Thanks0 -
Hmm I've got the same router and have no problems with my Xbox. I use a cabled connection. Bearing in mind that you aren't techie... how long have you had the router and have you ever upgraded the firmware? Mine is a 5 year old DG834v2 (the version should be on the bottom) and I upgraded my firmware last year. An upgrade could help, if there is one available for your version.0

Should work fine but yours maybe faulty. Although if it doesn't disconnect the other PCs on it then it maybe something to do with the settings.
You could even try updating it's firmware if it has any firmware updates.

Thanks for replies, ive already tried things mentioned.
I have have latest firmware
Tried using ethernet cable
Set up port forwarding
Moved modem closer
In fact ive spent hours trying to sort this
Always connects straight away, connects to XBL, joins games fine, but usually during game it just disconnects me and i drop out of game, exatly the same if wired or wireless.
Changing modem is just one more thing to try
I was thinking either it was that or maybe a problem with the Xbox. download speed is 5846 kbps and upload speed is 870 kbps on Talktalk dont know if speed has anything to do with it.
Dont know what else to try, my son's really upset, all his friends go online and play and chat fine but hes wont stop on.

question: do you play online games on your PC and its definitely not dropping out there too? if you just do browsing its very possibly your connection dropping there too and you wouldn;t notice
(had this problem recently where my connection was dropping/hanging for 4-8 secs every 5 mins, browsing it was unnoticable but gaming it was totally unusable and kept disconnecting me every 5 mins -had to get my ISP to interviene to get it fixed)
one way I found to comprehensivley test was using a freeware program to repetedly run ping tests (http://www.pingtester.net/). If you set it to run on your PC whilst your gaming and ping a) to your router at 192.168.0.1 or whatever and b) to a couple of reliable internet sites -i used www.google.co.uk and www.bbc.co.uk you'll be able to tell if the problem is with your internet connection to your ISP or locally from your router to your xbox
with me i could see the ping to my (ISP provided and configured) router being very stable but pings to anything on the outside world dropping out regularly at exactly the same time I was havign gaming problems. sent the log to my ISP and it was promptly fixed
