I really do think you need to see your GP about this as it sounds like you're getting yourself into a right state about this. Please be reassured: it's a really routine and uncomplicated procedure and I'm sure you'll be fine. Fear of the unknown is frightening but that's what it is, the unknown. I don't suppose for one moment the surgery is going to be as scary as you imagine it will be.
This is very sensible advice. TBH OP, I think this thread is feeding your fear. Try to be brave.
When my DD was 12 she had a little school friend who went throught the most gruelling treatments for cancer. She was the bravest little soul you could wish to meet and came up positive and smiling every time, despite knowing it was a battle she was losing.
I always remember her fortitude, whenever I'm feeling nervous and worried about something.

I've had at least 3 Generals. 2 when I was a kid and I had the premed once in medicine form. Didn't work for me I was still bouncing off the walls lol. A premed in the magic cream form. It was cream on a sticker in the shape of a butterfly and they take the sticker off and the cream goes in your hand. And this time (last year for me) I went in to have my sinuses seen to and polyps removed. I had no premed at all. For me the worst thing of the whole experience is what you are experiencing now ... the whole nervousness and fear before you go in. I was petrified I didn't sleep a wink the night before. I was so scared I was planning my will in my head ...!! Had to combat that with thinking don't be silly ... IF anything did happen they have all the drugs etc to hand to combat the reaction that I would have to the anaesetic. These guys are here to save my life lol not take it. They are trained for the worst possible senarios and know what to do in a flash.
Anyways i'm on the ward waiting to go down. My surgeon (consultant) comes to see me and run everything by me again. And then the Anaestist (i so cant spell that lol) came to see me as well. He spoke me through the Anaesetic side and asked about allergies etc etc asked if I had any questions. He was a nice man! When it came to going down a lady came to get me and walked down with me. This lady stayed in the room with me where I was to go to sleep and my Anaesitist who I had already met was there also. He asked me if I was ready and told me what was going to happen. The plan was to imsert cannula in my wrist and insert go-to-sleep-drugs in it but my veins were so tiny they gave up and said we will do this when you are asleep and can't feel anything. So they put the oxygen type mask over my mouth and the go-to-sleep drug went in this way in gas (breath it in) form. He said count to 10 and before you get to 10 you will be asleep. I think I reached 5 after that I was waking up. (As in the op was over!) And I was thinking oh was that it lol. Apparently I was down there for 3 hours. The only thing I noticed dropping off to sleep was feeling dizzy for literally about 1 second then I was asleep. I was just thinking to myself ohh thats funny I feel dizzy then I was gone as soon as I finished thinking it lol.
I am also in my 20's. Fit and healthy and I knew my fear was irrational and the chances of anything happening are like 1 in a 1000 or more. I had to think if it did i'm in the right place to be sorted!! lol. FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real. We tell ourselves we could die when really this is extremely remote and therefore not really true. But to us it feels very real. Therefore we need to FEAR = Face Everything And Recover from this fear. Good Luck!!!0 -
By the New Year you'll be wondering why you were ever so worried. I was almost sick with fear before being admitted for an op. It was over so quickly!0

Willa, by the time you get to the anaesthetist you will probably be well woozy from the pre med injection or drug. Im just the same as you, terrified but if you tell everyone that before hand then they will do their utmost to allay your fears. As for the anaesthetic itself, the stuff rush round so quick that you only have a few seconds to worry about it, honestly.
An hour is not a long operation. Ive had them 3 times longer and hence a lot more anaesthetic in my system. If you are going home the same day, you can be pretty sure you will be awake and about within a very short time so they can kick you out.
In the meantime, have you thought about going to an hypnotist to get some help before you go for the op and having a tape made by one which you can listen to right up to when you are wheeled down? Thats what I did last time.0 -
Hypnosis! Hethmar, you are clever, that's a brilliant idea0
