If not doesn't £750 seem very high ?

Was just going to say the same. You can get a decent car for that money these days-and that definitely isn't.

"on driving it home, an engine warning light came up. i didnt think it would be a big deal, so i arranged for a mechanic mate to give it a service and a once over."

A warning light came on, you ignored it, continued to drive it and your surprised that your 14 year old purchase has come to harm? It could have been as simple as a slight leak from a hose or the radiator that you could have found and fixed at very modest cost or trouble and the engine is now cooked.
  • When your friend looked at the car was there any evidence of trade tricks to hide the HG failure?
