Google mail webmail. You don't have to install anything, you use a browser. Access email anywhere and it's much better than Outlook Express and similar for searching on emails and a long list of features, too long to type here.
You can still use an email client program and google mail together and even access your email via (smart) mobile phones as google mail supports protocols like IMAP and POP3 - if you enable it.
There is a way to send and receive emails via google mail for any existing email addresses you already have, so you don't have to change email address.
  • Thanks.
What I was wanting to achieve was accessing several email addresses at the same time.
I do have several gmail accounts ( plus others) that I can access via the web.
I used to have M outlook 2003 but the new version that comes with pcs doesn't have it so was looking for something similar but free.
  • Windows live mail looks as though it would compartmentalise the various accounts. Would that be any good if I downloaded it or would lots of other stuff get downloaded with it without me knowing?

    What about thunderbird?

If you want a free local email client to work on Windows 7 - which doesn't have one - then you would probably be better with Thunderbird
It's from the same stable as Firefox, so should be decent. You won't get the Outlook extras such as calendar etc, but for an equivilant to Outlook Express / Windows Mail, it's pretty good.
  • I'd go with Gmail for an internet based client, but if you want a desktop client, I'd stick with Outlook Express / Windows Mail. Go for simplicity.

Then set up the gmail account you like the best to pick up email from all the others.
In gmail (aka google mail) Settings->Accounts and read about "Get mail from other accounts" and use the "Add a mail account you own" option.
I can be using up to 4 computers in any given day plus one mobile phone, a single computer collecting my email is utterly useless to me.

Just download Lightning which is the calendar extension for Thunderbird. It integrates into so it's not a separate app.

It's a development of Mozilla Sunbird which is a standalone calendar app.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Another vote for Gmail, easy to use in the browser, can be used offline in the browser, 8Gb of space for emails, excellent filtering, colour coded labeling, unlimited email addresses by using aliasing (name+alias@gmail.com), integrates perfectly with my iPod touch and Google Contacts, push mails to touch. Can be used with outlook or thunderbird with IMAP or POP but the browser interface is so good I no longer use outlook

    It just works
