MillaJoJo racks up £200 in charges each month. How can that be described as unexpected?

We have no idea about their circumstances, and it's pretty horrible to ask a question like that.

For all you know, those charges could just be made of charges and they don't have enough to cover it, so it gets added on each month, then the next month, then the next month. What would you do if you were in a situation like that? (honest question, and i'm interested in what you think)

I really need to learn to quote instead of pressing the thanks button.

Really it should be you saying 'thanks' to me. For all the people paying for other people's banking, I pick you as the person i'm subsidising.

Will you now answer my question in my post or will you just brush over it as usual?

Do you hope people stay in financial difficulties so that you can carry on with your free banking service, because this is in effect what you're saying.

Not one person has answered this, a question I have asked several times.

I wish everyone the best with their personal financial situations. I also hold no grudge with those who have genuinely been treated unfairly by banks, I'm sure there are a few genuine cases for reclaim of charges. What I object to very strongly are the people who are trying to claim back charges which they incurred fair and square due to poor management of their money, lack of budgeting etc. and now see the opportunity for a quick buck by jumping on this bandwagon.

I sincerely hope not. The majority of bank account holders who manage their money carefully, budget within their means, and therefore manage to avoid going into unauthorised arrears would quite like to continue with free banking thank you very much.

My Word! not another idiot who has been taken in by this "threat". As if the banks would ever do that! it would alienate all of their customers and all it would take is one bank to offer free banking and every one of them would follow suit in fear of losing their customers! if the banks could get away with that they'd have done it years ago! what better way to make money? - to charge people a fee for banking! after all it is a service they provide, it's just a shame that it's a essential service like energy and water, both of which are regulated by OFCOM to make sure they don't price fix and rip people off, why the banks are immune to this type of regulation and don't have to answer to anybody is beyond me. The banks are only interested in making money for themselves aren't they? so ask yourself why they don't charge you for using your bank account? ask yourself why and have a good think about it, then think of their threat to charge people for having and using their accounts. Ridiculous isn't it?! i can't believe people are so stupid that they actually fall for it. Or do you believe that the banks really care about the general public? their sweet little customers and want to make sure you're well looked after and protected from any costs? if they did they wouldn't charge any interest on loans and credit cards would they? Besides, they have already introduced pay monthly banking schemes, Halifax's Ultimate Reward Current Account for example. This scaremungering has got to stop, it's just propaganda being used to scare people like you into turning against the good honest people fighting for a percentage of their money back, not everyone is asking for it all back, just the difference between the cost the banks have incurred and what the banks have charged them. People just want to be treated fairly, is that so much to ask?

You didn't answer the question. Are you a politician? If not you'de make an excellent candidate!

Do you hope people stay in financial difficulty in order to keep your banking free?
  • I don't think anyone has seen bank charges as a quick buck for the last two years however can we keep the thread on topic please as there really are plenty of threads were people can argue, politely, regarding their personal opinions.

I totally agree. It would be really nice to have at least just one thread in the entire 'Reclaim Bank & Credit Card Charges' forum that could be devoted to discussing just that.

I did answer it, there isn't a straight yes or no answer. It would not be fair for the 80% of bank account holders who manage their accounts carefully and don't take unauthorised money to suffer (through introduction of account fees) in order to subsidise those who don't manage their affairs properly and therefore take money to which they are not entitled. Too many people routinely live their lives at the limit of authorised overdrafts to fund a lifestyle which their income doesn't justify. When they then go into unauthorised arrears and incur charges I have little sympathy.

Edinburghlass, sorry I only saw your request after my last post. Will refrain from posting further on this thread. You are right, there are several others already going which would be more appropriate for this discussion.
  • In a lot of cases I would imagine it's just the snowball effect of tight budget being eaten by charges, it's definately my case. When i've forseen that I may go overdrawn, I've requested an overdraft facility for just one month.. and been told not on my account because it's basic, so when I've asked to upgrade to an account that has the facility, I'm told no.

But why should a bank give me a facility that covers my costs occasionally when they can make £35 every other month or so off my back.

I've requested details of charges I've occured so wait on baited breath to see the route that we will take now.
