Word 2000 doing my head in

Hi, I would greatly appreciate a solution to the problem I am having with word 2000...
Recently, I have had problems using Word 2000 (The cursor kept disappearing and heaps of text I had written did not appear on screen) so I uninstalled it, and then reinstalled. I was asked for the product key to complete the reinstall, which I could not find. So, to enable me to use word again I used 'system restore' and restored my computer to a period before I uninstalled the Word program. After this I tried to open word and received the following:
'the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable, Click OK to try again or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'S11167. MANISPO3MSP' in the box below:
use source: c/programfiles/officeupdate11/cabs/s11167/
If I click OK I am told:
'Installation source for this product is not available'
I am unable to use a different path; it will not enter it into the box, not that I know what path to use anyway. I have used the Workssuite installation disc that came with my computer and which includes word 2000 but, as I say, when I try to open word I get the message above.
I hope someone can make sense of it and steer me in the right direction. I have now found the word product key but unfortunately cannot get to the bit where I have to enter it.
I have over time been installing office 2003 updates and I suspect these may have something to do with the problem. Also, even when I try to uninstall Word 2000 I receive the same message above.

Thanks,

First thing I would do is completely remove office from Add/Remove programs then restart the PC then I would uninstall the Office updates from Add remove also, you may have to tick show updates to remove the Office 03updates, then restart PC then reinstall Office again.

Thanks for the responses. It's not a work computer. I have removed as much as I can but I cannot uninstall word 2001 sr-1 nor works 2001 set up launcher - the same message above crops up. I cannot find any office 2003 programs to remove either.

Might be worth checking if any components of Office are being loaded at start-up.
Click Start, Run, type msconfig, click the Start up tab and uncheck anything related to Office. Then reboot.
    It might uninstall better then.

Go to program files C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office - paste into a IE open browser window, then delete the contents of the folder, had this problem with office 2003 recently, couldn't unistall, couldn't upgrade (office 12 beta) deleted the contents of the above folder and it allowed me to re-install.

Not promising it will work for you, but hey, its worth a try :)

    Hi,
I stopped office 2003 from loading at start up and deleted the files from program files. But nothing else has changed. I am still getting the above error message from Windows installer. I am advised to 'try to find the installation package 511167.MAINSP3op.msp' in a folder from which you can install the product. What the **** is that? When I do browse and look for other files to use for my source (which currently is: c:/programfiles/officeupdate11/cabs/511167/) I cannot enter any filename that is recognised. Beneath the filename, files of type, which seems fixed, reads patchpackage(*.MSP). No idea what this is either. Hopefully this computer talk will be clear to someone else!

Try this URL, please read it carefully, and you use it at your own risk of course.

If you have the Office 2000 disks, the utility mentioned is on the first CD.

This should manually remove most traces of Office 2000. But should only be used after you have tried an automatic uninstall using "control panel" and "add and remove programs".

USE WITH EXTREME CAUTION, it does exactly that (forces a removal of all Office 2000 programs, including Outlook etc etc). Make sure you have disks to do a re-install, and have a backup of your data.

Looking at your other posts, be careful, it might interfere with other versions of Office as well.

I cannot find an office disc. I use a Dell Inspiron laptop; would it have come pre installed on that (bought it 2001)? As I said, I have Microsoft works suite which includes word 2000 sr-1. I have tried to delete all the office programs I could find (currently in recycle bin). Bit reluctant to try the above as I don't seem to have any office disc to reinstall. I don't actually know how essential office is. I am prepared to buy a new computer, but I still want this laptop to have word working on it. I don't want to throw it out because of a program I should be able to reinstall.
The Dell initially came with windows ME installed. I upgraded to XP a couple of years ago; don't know if this makes much of a difference.
Seems it must be the office 2003 updates that are preventing word 2000 from uninstalling. But I don't know what to change the filename to to enable it to open, obviously the current 'office updates' source is useless.

What do you want on your laptop at the end of all of this? If you just want Word, and you have a disk for Works (which includes a version of Word), then follow the Office 2000 removal instructions, then use your Works disk to put Word back onto the system once its clean.

As I said in the previous post, if you have some Office 2003 programs installed on the laptop, it may be that they will need to be uninstalled and re-installed at some point (so make sure you have the disks ready for the re-install).

In my experience, once you are in a situation like the one you are in, with windows asking for installation sources etc, you are better off to un-install and re-install the offending application(s).
