just be a bit careful with oxbridge generalistions.... there is a tiny minority who live up to the stereotype, but it isn't fair on the others (or indeed, even accurate). having gone there, i don't want to be judged for it (indeed, i find it just as offensive as when the tiny minority of snobby individuals judge others for not going!).I did go to one of their moderators meets last month. Majority are Oxbridge, and I'm more University of Life. A fair few of them couldn't take the harsh reality of proper life, and I upset a fair few of them. At the same time, there were a few who I did enjoy the company of.:happyhear0 -
Whereas I barely go on there anymore, as because I did a BTEC and A-levels, I'm discounted as being an idiot (which, in fact, im not. I changed courses to do English and Film 7 weeks in and I've caught up to the same standard as everyone else - in some cases better - because a couple of lecturers had faith in me) Oh, they also don't like me cos I did the *soft* option - film. I'da kicked their !!!!!! anyway, the up-themselves !!!!!** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

In fairness though, I have yet to meet, either through work or that, one person who attended there and doesn't fit that stereotype. I've probably came across around 100 people.0 -
well i think that's a real shame and i've probably met equal numbers of abonoxious people from other russell group unis than from oxbridge and plenty of abnoxious people with no university background. In fairness though, I have yet to meet, either through work or that, one person who attended there and doesn't fit that stereotype. i can only go by all the people i met in my three years there to say that i think you are wrong and it is a real shame that you hold that view. i'm not responsible for that or for whatever caused that, but it is unfair and largely unjustified.
as i said, judging anyone on an inital basis on their uni is just plain silly and anyone who has worked for a number of years should be able to see the individual rather than an out of date stereotype. i personally find your comments about oxbridge firstly, unnecessary, and secondly, quite rude!:happyhear0 -
Sometimes, when you are of the opinion that everyone else has the problem, the problem really lies with you.;)0

I know one who doesn't fit the stereotype.
The rest? Just as you say. I don't think it's any coincidence that many fearsomely intelligent people didn't get into Oxbridge. From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -
One of my best friends goes to Cambridge. He's lovely. Although on first meeting he probably would 'fit the stereotype'. He's confident (usually) which could be seen as arrogant, which he is not. He does joke with me about how I go to a 'substandard' university (Glasgow), but I reply by saying Cam's department for my subject is rubbish. I don't think we should judge someone on their university. I know plenty of obnoxious people up here.0

Don't get me wrong, I'll judge everyone individually. But from my own experiences, that's been the way with those students. If someone from Oxbridge did prove me wrong, then fine. But the majority are as I said, I'm afraid.0

My friend's daughter recently went for an interview at Oxford and she said there was some lovely people there, but also plenty who fit the stereotype.
Overall she enjoyed it but it did put her off wanting to study there as she said it was a very different atmosphere from the other unis she has applied for.
I know several Oxbridge grads and they are all great people so I guess it just depends who you meet!0 -
actually, i met more 'offputting' people on open days and at interview than i actually met there.... i think most get screened out by the interview process! My friend's daughter recently went for an interview at Oxford and she said there was some lovely people there, but also plenty who fit the stereotype.
