  • This actually happened to me and I was locked out - it was a real pain, I suggest you fix it ASAP. The best way is to replace the latch mechanism or, if you dont make use of the "little round buttion" you could jam it in the unlocked position with a piece of tape or something.

cally6008 I was Not answering the question about the lock, I know nothing about locks , I was stating what I have done , so that I ( and only I ) will not be locked out.

That's useful, I have a thread about a leaking pipe, if you know nothing about them too maybe you can post a few words there.

well its not a lock ive seen before.
ive seen old latch buttons fail and drop, through wear/tear, but they could still be opened from outside with the key.
deadlocks usually require the key to be turned twice.
    Get some gorm.

If you do not know how to take a lock to pieces then just buy a new one. How are we on here supposed to know if it can be fixed without being able to look at it. I for one, certainly would want something better than a rim latch for a front door.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I have buried a key in a jam jar in the garden .
Its not a high tech solution , but it gives me reassurance.
Even knowing where to dig, will take us some time to recover the key
But its better than calling a locksmith/breaking a window to get in.

I do not think hiding a key under a stone is a good idea.

This is pointless if the internal safety mechanism designed to stop key operation externally jams on.

A new barrel takes five minutes to install.Show me a picture of the barrel and I will point you in the right direction for an exact replacement.cheers

if this is def the same size go buy it and honestly super super easy to install. you could just even replace the back part as the barrel isnt broken. if so just three screws.

Hi Cally, just a thought but is that the only lock you have on the door??.If so then your home contents insurance is void.Insurance companies insist on at least one 5 lever deadlock on an entrance door.

Yale locks (cylinder night latches) are pretty cheap, I would just replace the whole lock TBH.Just buy a like for like lock and it should just be a case of taking off the old one and screwing on the new one.
The only cutting, sawing you may need to do is shortening the "Barrel snib(The back of the key-hole ) They have grooves in to help you guide a hack-saw, just make sure you dont cut it too short , the instructions will say something like " Cut the barrel snib/tab so that it protrudes 10mm or whatever they say from the back of the door" and screw the lock case to the back of the door........

Like Chrisg said they are very ,very simple to replace..

Or if it is the only lock on the door upgrade it to a bs3621 night latch 2 birds with one stone (that your spare key is under):D
