    AOL is IMO excellent.

Free broadband modem, cheap customer services, very stable, when on broadband you don't need their software to run your connection.

I have used them 4 years and not a problem.

also very expensive for proper wireless support and their software plays about with you PC and is a so+so to remove (if you are not savvy enough to install it without the AOL software)

NTL also do Virgin so avoid them if you had problems with Tesco, Tiscalli are a nightmare , Bulldog have pulled out of the Market and Talk-Talk are meant to be having problems keeping up with demand (another thread on here for that)

i have found zazizam (from £11.99) to be good... all you need is your MAC from tesco, and you can move your connection across....

as for wireless - best thing to do is buy the kit... with prices are coming down all the time, a quick google search gave me a result from amazon at just under £60 http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000TZ8Z8/026-9309632-2912416 - but I am sure there are lower priced ones around

    check out http://www.adslguide.org.uk/
that got every isp on it and a list of line quality/speed/customer service

imo Pipex is best (after being on tiscali over a year ago) i havent had any lag at all in games and the connection speed is always high, doesnt seem to go down either (and i leave this computer on all the time)

There are plenty of "cheap" monkey outfit ISPs out there - Browntoa sums up a bunch nicely. Sounds like your son wants to play games online? Then he'll want a responsive connection - a good "ping rate".
Nearly all of these "cheap" ISPs restrict the speed of their connections in some way or another to keep their wholesale costs down. This is known as throttling or traffic-shaping. Thats probably ok for checking your email and reading MSE. You'll have to spend a bit more if you/your son intend to indulge a bit more ie: downloads, music, podcasts, online games, online radio etc.

    I'd consider:-
https://www.Ace-Internet.co.uk (no throttling, good name, been around since 98, v good CS)
https://www.Nildram.co.uk (no throttling but large reasonable limits (50GB/month) - although owned by Pipex who do throttle)
    https://www.IDNet.co.uk (No throttling, fast reputation)

Definitely check out https://www.adslguide.org.uk as they have forums dedicated to this topic.

    DONT GO WITH TISCALI

in fact, dont go with any of the 'mainstream' ISP's, AOL, BT, Tiscali, Bullldog ive always heard bad thing sabout, and Tiscali were awful for us.

Try and find an ISP which is less known, in my experience they often have much better customer service, better speeds, and less fuss over lots of downloading ;)

It seem to be a matter of luck. I have read some really bad things about NTL. But I Have been with them nearly 4 years. I've had no problems

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.
