Saw this on another forum the other day,

I think they explode, when oxygen builds up in the bulb. The bulb is supposed to be vacuum sealed with the filament inside. The filament is a piece of metal that glows white hot when you run current through it.When a bulb goes it is because the filament has become so weak, the surge of current has broken it. When a filament breaks, the electricity tries to arc between the two closest broken points, which produces sparks (and those lines you see on TV smile.gif ) A spark needs oxygen to cause an explosion, but in a vacuum seal bulb, there is none. In a cheap bulb, there might be if it isn't sealed proper, so it could explode a little.
sounds quite plausible to me, just wish I could take the credit for it :D

Also can't believe you actually wanted an involuntary bowel movement, (which is not unreasonable to assume it could easily have been quite violent and in copius amounts) in your living room whilst fully clothed (assuming you were dressed at the time) ;)
Wouldn't it be a bit more hygenic to drink fresh orange, eat lots of fruit and veg or drink prune juice? :D

Was it a GU10 spotlight bulb by any chance?
Ours exploded all the time, glass everywhere normally.

Why does it matter why it exploded. Even if you knew, there would be nothing you could do about it. Just put it down to an unfortunate experience. With reference to your constipation I can only say "s***" happens.
When I was in the Merchant Navy, part of my job was to relamp thousands of incandescent light fittings in a Cunard Liner. When I say thousands, I mean exactly that. They were always blowing due to the vibration of the engines. The only time we ever had a bulb explode was when a drop of cold water got on the outside of the lamp while it was lit.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

We made the mistake of using cheap (pound shop) candle bulbs in our wall lights, and we've had two explode sending glass down onto the sofa. Only going to buy quality ones in future!

It's your happy go lucky attitude that keeps you going isn't it!
The ladies bulb exploded, she wanted to know why, I read the thread and it interested me enough to go look for an answer (yes I am a sad act I know)
Knowledge is power etc etc, and using your attitude I honestly don't give a toss if you replaced literally thousands of light bulbs on a cunard liner, i'll just accept that me reading your negative comments was an 'unfortunate experience'

    Thanks everyone ...even happycrack:D

I was concerned due to the fact we just had the house rewired a few weeks plus hubby only fitted that light a week ago ,was concerned it could be a wiring issue but hubby has taken the fitting down and all the wiring checks out so hopefully a freaky one off:confused:#
The bulb was just a regular golfball style ,about 3 months old .

So ...as for the other matter ....anyone got the number for Dyna rod ?! :o
