Housing Benefit/Income Support

Hi, wander if anyone can help.

Lost my job few months ago, live in a council has and own another which is generally rented with no profit.
When i started to claim benefit i did not disclose this 2nd property and am begining to think that i should have. The 2nd property is in negative equity, however the advice i was give by a dss advisor(annonomously) was that i may need to sell the 2nd property before i could be entiltles to Income Support. I currently recieve housing/councul tax benefit for teh council hse i live in and income support as am a lone parent.
My dilemma is that i think i should advise the benefits office of my 2nd property but am worried that i will be prosecuted for not disclosing and lose benefits which i can not live with out? Or even lose the council hse i live in,Is this benefit fraud and what is the likely outcome when i tell them?

  • Personally, I think it's a scandal that you have been given a council house when you actually own a property, but maybe that's just me.

Why on earth would you rent out a house that is in negative equity for no profit, only to choose to live in a council house that is most likely NEEDED by another family with nowhere to live?????? Is the tenant in your house getting housing benefits/LHA by chance? Are you in the same council? Better come clean with them before they invite you in for a meeting!

Probable troll alert? 'GiddyGiddy' hardly sounds like a name for someone concerned about being done for benefit fraud does it?

    I can't do it.

Its fraud. You could be made to pay back all the benefits you have had, perhaps a fine/jail.

There are needy people waiting for council houses and you already own your own place!

    I hope you get stung.

GiddyGiddy - most probably you where homeless and needed a house and you were given a council house and you worked hard to get money and then decided to purchase a home for rental income. This is fine by the council, but as you are now claiming HB/CTB with the 2nd property - this is fraud! As you needed to declare this in the form and this would mean you can not get any HB/CTB!
