Ebay - Best method for receiving payment

I thought I might sell some more stuff on Ebay. I did had one bad experience with a buyer and a bouncing cheque previously, but that was all sorted out in the end. Have also heard lots of bad press about Paypal, although this is my preferred method when purchasing.

What do other people think?? Is it best to accept all forms of payment?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Paypal, although this is my preferred method when purchasing.

You covered it here. Although Bleugh will be along to tell the dangers of PayPal; although I generally accept all payments my favourite is bank transfer (doesn't happen that often) and PayPal.

If you don't have PayPal many folk will not bid (99% I wouldn't), so to gain the best price you need PayPal (with all its faults).

I'm with Hintza. I'm one of the high percentage of people who wouldn't even look at an auction if they didn't accept paypal.

It does have problems, although after several thousand transactions I've never experienced problems myself. For me it has been cheques that have caused problems, but I still take them as I think the more payment options the better.

Just remember when using paypal to protect yourself. All items under £32 need a COP so you can refund and reclaim your losses from the RM in cases of non delivery. All items over £32 must go special delivery, never offer it as an option, the insurance is to protect the seller not the buyer.

Paypal is quick, easy and free for the purchaser of an item but the seller has to pay fees of 4% which is quite alot in my opinion.
I just sold a gamecube game for £3 and was charged 30p by paypal, thats 10% ! and a transaction for £51 cost me £2.
Also dont rely on paypal to 'protect' you, i bought a usb memory stick last year and it was a fake, paypal didnt want to know, neither did the police. Luckily i had legal protection with my home insurance and direct line sorted it out for me.

I wouldn't buy from someone who didn't offer PayPal as a method of payment. It's quick and easy for both the buyer and seller.

i tried nochex (slightly cheaper than paypal) for a while but my buyers wanted to use paypal instead. If im selling a high value item (£500 +) i expect the buyer to pay the paypal fees. I have had no problem with this.

As a buyer i always pay with paypal because its easy.

Uh oh. You do of course realise that to surcharge on paypal payments is completely against ebay rules?

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

You are not permitted to make your buyers pay YOUR PayPal fees. You are expected to pay them.

Have you not read the eBay rules?

i make it VERY clear on my listings that if im selling a laptop etc which sell for around £700 to include an extra 3% if wishing to use paypal. I do not force people to use paypal as i offer other payment methods. I am also a powerseller which ebay gave me for being a good seller and I have 1000+ feedback so I do know a bit about ebay!

    Hi Tibbie's Mum...

Nochex is a good choice as chargeback is low. But again it depends on your target market. If your buyers are UK buyers, then it is ok. But not from other countries as buyer need to have UK bank account to link with nochex.

    Moneybookers is another good alternative.

If not, then consider merchant service provider like 2co.com.
