    hello
    quick question.
Some really lovely person has shattered the wing mirror on my daughters little car. It will probably cost more than the car is worth to get it replaced .
Is it legal to drive until we get her a new one?

many thanks to any who know the answer

    churcgrat

I vote for illegal as http://www.ukmot.com/6-6.asp says a car needs a mirror visible from the drivers seat, which can be OS, NS or inside and then in the small print goes on to say that cars made after 1978 must have two mirrors, OS and one other

Edited to add the red bits

I was under the impression that you had to have an offside mirror and one other, [strike]but I am surprised to say I agree with you[/strike] it is better written here
    http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_810.htm
[strike]Only 1 mirror required and can be in one of 3 posistions.[/strike]

    HOWEVER:
    Why does it then say
"Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options."

More to the point why doesn't it say "Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats must have any one of the above options."
If there is a requirement for passenger vehicles with less than 7 seats after 1 August 1978 you'd think they would mention it wouldn't you?

Ah! No I don't agree, I found it
"Passenger vehicles with more than 7 passenger seats of any age, and all passenger vehicles first used on or after I August 1978 (not being a minibus as above), must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'."

When you go to the scrap yard (because your door may be damaged, ask the scrapman/boy to look at the car and ask him if it will be ok for attaching another mirror onto it.

Failing that, someone mentioned Halfrauds selling stick on mirrors, sounds like a good idea, if you can buy one which sticks onto the door or the wing it will look crap but it solves the problem. It will fail an MOT like it is
  • If it's a little old micra with no electrics etc - I doubt that the mirror assy will be that expensive to replace. Recommend get the part from Nissan and get an independent to fit for you - tops, half an hours labour.

Its not a catastrophe - it happens all the time.

Would you want your daughter to drive a car that didn't give full visibility to th over taking side, NO ANSWER REQED, you wouldn't
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • These stick on 'mirrors' are absolutely stupid and not very good at all. I do not recommend the OP opts for this very cheap rubbish option. I'm all for saving money - but there is a limit.

Halfords sell a stick on replacement mirror glass only, not a lot of good when the bit to stick it on to has gone as well.

It also seems to have wrenched the part of the door that the mirror is attached to--if you see what I mean, not sure that there is much left that I can attach the mirror to, at least not in exactly the same place.
If you mean the plastic triangle on the door then that is part of the mirror, see here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISSAN-MICRA-MIRROR-wing-door-BLACK-MANUAL-R-HAND-93-02_W0QQitemZ370227681393QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item56334a1871 and I suggest not going to Nissan. There are plenty of copy parts available at local motor factors. For my Focus electric mirror - genuine £85, copy £30. You can even see where the Ford mark was on the mould !!
  • dont buy a new one, madness on a car that has little value

buy from a scrappy or ebay, ask some of your daughters friends to fit it if you cant do it in house
