"talking about heat problems are there any free program similar to everest, which gives you a temp reading, but can display the reading in the Icon area"

Try HDD Thermometer (see https://www.rdsoft.com). I've just started using it - seems fine and dead easy to use. No registration required - they ask you to, but you don't have to.

How do you know it's overheating?

Overclockers might need to worry about heat, but I have never seen a run of the mill PC or laptop overheat unless the fan has broken..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

had problems with it crashing (not shutting down) just powering off with battery in and just on mains power

    Sorry, try this link:

    http://www.rsdsoft.com/index.php4

The one you want is HDD Thermometer 1.3. My copy was on a free disk that came with a magazine called "PCRescue" (PC Tools -issue 30; Recovery Kit).
Not very often I'll pay 5 quid for a magazine (or anywhere near, in fact), but this one was worth every penny. From WHSmiths.

p.s. Using it, and also checking the CPU & M/B temperatures (using BIOS, in my case) can be a real eye-opener. I've just spent 20 quid on a Vantec 3.5" HDD Cooler plus a Vantec Spectrum Fan Card that fits into a PCI slot. See https://www.thecoolingshop.com. I'll let you know if they're any good.

You could also try http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ - Motherboard Monitor, which will let you monitor the ambient temperature of the machine as well as components :)

The HDD Cooler and Fan Card arrived tonite. Any good? Dunno, cos' I never got round to fitting them. The HDD Cooler has the same model number on the invoice as shown on the website, but is not the same on the actual packaging. The website version has an aluminium heatsink, wheras the one they sent me was made of plastic. Useful...
I checked on the Vantec website and it doesn't even appear to be one of their products...
As for the Fan Card - a similar story, with a different part number on the packaging again. The model on the website has roller bearings in the fans, the one they sent has sleeve bearings....
Does it appear on the Vantec (USA) website - no, but it's on the Vantec (Taiwan) site though...

Both items are going straight back to https://www.thecoolingshop.com for replacement or refund, with my return postage costs to be refunded also.
I'll let you know the outcome...
