Just back and wanted to update the post. No one checked our bag weights, however I could see there was a scale right before security x-rays, so I guess they can easily check the weights if they wish. Also, no one was checking the dimensions of the bags and lots of people have chosen to ignore this issue and bring along huge bags. I am sure that now that Mr O'Leary will start charging for debit cards, he will be more strict with these. As Buspass mentioned I also like to be on the safe side and our bags were right under 10 kgs!! We did book one hold bag just in case we wanted to buy some stuff at the markets and move weights around, which we did.

Also there was a gas station 5 kms from the airport on the way to catch the A57 to Koeln and this was the closest to the airport according to our GPS. 1.33€ per liter of gas.

Note: If you rent a car I'd suggest a trip to Kevelaer which is nearby 8kms and is charming. It's a pilgrimage town, very quaint and the sanctuary is a beautiful neo-gothic cathedral with painted stones inspired by the Saint-Chapelle in Paris.

Kevelaer, is also the nearest town to catch the train, we got a mini shuttle from the airport to Kevelaer

we where able to buy a ticket from the shuttle bus driver for the following 2 hours
this worked out the best deal
  • 1.33EUR/litre seems a bit high - but then again, regional differences may change things a bit. It was running at 1.21EUR recently in Berlin-Brandenburg.
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)

    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.

We travelled throughout NRW region and it was basically the same price 1.30 to 1.34 depending on location. Diesel was about 1.11€. These were mostly motorway gas stations, so there might be a price premium associated. PBS you might have been lucky and found discount gas stations. I kept my eyes open throughout the trip and was dismayed to see little price fluctuations. In the end, to fill up our rental Astra SW 1.6, that was a bit of a drinker, an almost full tank cost 60€.
FYI: The rental was 110€ for 3 days with Hertz (Golf or similar with GPS) and I have the yearly excess insurance cover (£40) - we were upgraded to the station wagon, which was nice since there were 4 of us and the trunk was big, but I guess the SW was more of a drinker than the Golf would have been. The only trouble we had was that the GPS (that came with the car) was programmmed in italian so we had to read the instructions, insert the language cd to choose the language and restart the thing.

Looking at prices in the local area, €1.33 sounds about right: http://www.clever-tanken.de/liste_payed.asp?ort=47652&typ=Normal&image1.x=60&image1.y=5

Over the border in the Netherlands it's a fair bit higher (http://www.goedkooptanken.nu/brandstofprijzen/coordinaten/brandstofprijzen.php?type=euro95&s_zip=&s_city=venlo&search=zoek&longitude=6.17500&latitude=51.37167&city=Venlo), so I think I'll stick to buying in Germany when I'm over there in January.

Of course, if someone knows of cheaper petrol stations not covered by these sites, I'd be interested to hear it...
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

This info is wrong. Weeze is the nearest station for connection to Nijmegan or the other way into Dusseldorf.
  • PS. if you leave your car near to the airport entrance and walk across the road to the woods you may well come across some wild boar who absolutely love to chase anyone in their territory, but there are also 'escape towers' to go up and avoid injury, plus they are good for a bit of bird watching. These woods are also worth a rummage to look for old WW2 German shell and bullet cases, respirator masks, knives and other assorted parephenalia. Whilst on the subject of WW2 a visit to the vast commenwealth war graves cemetry at Siebengewald (only 10 mins away) is also the place to get a reality check on life and to understand the sacrifices our forefathers made for us.
  • Well the GPS got you ripped off then as that garage on the A57 is much dearer and further then the ones I mentioned in my earlier post. Mind you I never cared about the price, paying absolutely no taxes at all on our fuel when I lived there.
