Anyone flown out of Weeze/ Germany recently?

Hi,
Has anyone flown recently out of Weeze airport with Ryanair? Are they checking the weights of hand baggage to see if it complies with the 10 kg limit?
I know in Stansted airport, London the weight gets checked before x-ray by airport security. Then at the ryanair gate only the number of volumes is strictly enforced. The dimensions are a bit of an eyeball. I keep forgeting to buy a hand scale for the bags... Any ideia as to what is going on at Weeze airport recently?
We are renting a car and returning it at the airport. Has anyone seen a gas station near the airport?
Thanks in advance.

not sure about checking weights, as we had hand luggage only
its a very, very small airport, stepped off the plane and was outside within 2-3 minutes
however the airport is an old miltary airport, I would say its in the middle of nowwhere, the nearest town is about 10-15 minutes
wouldn't expect to many petrol stations near by, don't remember seeing any
check out trip advisor, you should get some more info on there0 -
With Ryanair, the best advice is simply not to risk it. They're doing a much, much better job lately with enforcing the limits - and while people might not have had a problem in x airport, it doesn't mean that they won't target that airport next. I know for a fact that they are starting to target smaller airports too, not just the big ones.
If you do decide to risk it, then please don't complain on here if you get caught. From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.

thanks for the info.
That was precisely what I meant: are they checking hand luggage weights? From your reply, my guess is no. For some reason my hand bag is always heavier when I return
so I like to leave a spare couple of kgs for that.
PolishBigSpender, I know the best is not to risk it, but in the true MSE spirit, why buy a hold bag allowance when I might not need it?PolishBigSpender wrote: »If you do decide to risk it, then please don't complain on here if you get caught.
Quick side note: also PBS, I am a regular Ryanair user for the past 5 years so am aware of how Ryanair works. Regardless of that, there really is not need to snap beforehand by forecasting I will then come here to complain. I am a regular MSE reader and poster and if I want to complain (in the right place), it is my right, isn't it? :rolleyes:0 -
Hello pcg2001,
Just to correct an earlier post, the town of Weeze is only 5 mins away not 10-15. Follow signs for the Autobahn A57 to head further into Germany or across the border to Holland. When you pick up your car why not stop off on the way out to visit an excellent museum dedicated to the history of former RAF Laarbruch. There are two petrol stations in Weeze, one in the town centre next to a supermarket and a BP garage on the Weeze bypass, you cannot miss either of them. Hope that helps !0 -

Thanks DutchMartin. Not heading towards Holland this time but towards some German Xmas markets, in Germany this time (which is a first for me after visiting many in the UK). But next time round I definitely will cross the border. (Weeze may not be Dusseldorf, but it sure is central for sightseeing. And for €20 with Ryanair you can't wrong with this destination.) Thanks for the tip about the museum, I am sure OH will appreciate it as well.0 -

True - but equally so, it's not worth risking it with Ryanair when you know that they have stepped up their checks dramatically. Of course, the best way round it is to load up your pockets with heavy things too.Quick side note: also PBS, I am a regular Ryanair user for the past 5 years so am aware of how Ryanair works. It's not your right to do so if it was your own fault. I'm sick to death of reading complaints about Ryanair caused by the traveller rather than the airline! From Poland...with love.

So you've opted for preventing that by posting a preemptive post admonishing an act I might be compelled to make given the description of my current situation?
this is very "minority report"!!
And by the way, I stear clear of the posts called "Ryanair complaint / rant", "I hate Ryanair", "How the 5 quid flight turned into a 1000 flight for the family of 4 who forgot to check.in online and packed their house in the hold luggage". Unless you're a masochist, I'd steer clear of those as well
And how about that BBC report done by people who had never flown Ryanair before?! That was a laugh!
PS: I am having a really rough day, so sorry if I decided to write an ironic reply to you. I know irony works really well online (being ironic again)! :rotfl:
By the way, when I posted this, my intention was simply to be prepared and know in advance their procedures - I am a control freak. I have no intention of risking taking excess luggage. If I do I will simply put it down to part of the cost of flying Ryanair. The worst that can happen is that I need to pay for the hold bag. (but I'll make sure to PM you about it!! ups there I go again!

Yes they are
And no matter how much you argue with them, if your over they won't budge, all your doing is holding the que up, as the people in front of us did at weeze the other week.
It's simple your luggage allowance is 10kg, stick by the rules and play fair, if you want to take more than 10kg then pay for it, this isn't just aimed at you op, but to all of the others who complain about, ryanair, when really there only complaining because they haven't got away with being over.
I say fair play to ryanair, if your over your charged, because some people take the p*** and have cases that should weigh 15kg and they are 23kg,
right that's my rant over.0 -
Last time I passed through Weeze Airport (in February) staff were waiting at departures with scales to weigh every piece of luggage. My wife had to put her handbag into her case and the whole lot had to weigh under 10 kilos. Interestingly they did not check dimensions other than, I assume, just having a good look.
Passed through Marseilles Airport in July and nobody seemed to bother and many passengers carried more than one item on to the plane.
Just to stay on the safe side and to prevent any stress we try to ensure we are always within their limits both weight and size wise. It gives me a great feeling of one upmanship when they dont 'catch ' me. A bit like thwarting a traffic warden hovering waiting to book your car on expiry of the parking ticket. But maybe I am just a bit sad. You get used to it, though.0
