Going overdrawn without authorisation on a current account is tantamount to theft. Regularly diong so is very close to fraud. Why are responsible account holders being expected to pay for the irresponsible?
P.S. Title should read "profligacy"!

So...your employer cocks up, doesn't pay your wages in on the right day or miscalculates..you are a quid short on a DD...the bank charges like a rhino on steroids.....and that makes youa theif ?

I'd say that charging 35 quid a pop for an automatically generated letter is closer to theft.

In my case a few years ago I withdrew some cash from my account to pay a solicitor who had been great with us...as it was weekend he said he'd prefer a cheque..so I put the cash right back and wroye a cheque. The £500 quid took all wekkend and 3 further days to "clear" leaving me overdrawn and charged. When does cash need to clear I wonder? Isn't that also closer to theft? It still happens too...it happened to me again a few weeks back, but this time I didn't go overdrawn ..but still had 3 days to wait for cash to clear.

Going overdrawn can happen to anyone and through no fault of their own.
My milkman doesn't charge me a penny for milk he doesn't deliver...the bank is more than happy to charge me for not paying a DD though...for doing nothing.

I'd love to see how 25 to 35 quid is a fair or honest charge to automatically generate and send a letter....untouched by human hands and probably never seen by human eyes either.

    yup i agree...

But peeps have rites. To "steal the banks money"

Many people are giving examples off why the banks honour the DD, and reckon they should not be honoured.

Well managed accounts should never be OVERDRAWN

Can you not request that and payments Are never honoured if it makes you overdrawn?

No but your complaint is with your employer and not your bank.
The employer should reimburse the charges as it is their fault.

The problem is the banks will still charge you just for the honor of not paying the DD and for having to look at it :( Yet we cant complaine that when we pay a cheque into the back the time it takes to clear is actually overnight not 4-5 days but the banks are using our money to loan out for a few days and gaining intrest for the banks

    Well thats happened too me.
What did i do call my bank RBS and they wiped the charge off. Why because it was a one of.

Accidents happen. Taking the pee also happens.
  • So taking our money and floating it on the stock market isn't theft is it?

Imagine the bank goes bust... Your money is invested in other things... You stand to lose a !!!!!! ton of cash there. Why do you think the banks needed bailing out? It's to protect our money not themselves yet they still want to use an extortionate and draconian system to waste even more of our money. Now that IS theft if you were to ask me

Of course, that is convieniently forgotten about hey!?!

Some people incurr more charges due to the original charge. Like myself. I managed my money but one mistake and bang, I am up to my eyeballs with debt owed to the bank.

That soapbox is extremely high! Want a step ladder to get down from it?

I been there many moons ago..£1000 over the overdraft and 300 pound in charges. The bank extended my overdraft too compensate for it after a meeting with them.

I bust my backside and paid it off. All run up by my ex...all cards.cheque books destroyed so the hole did not get any deeper

Its called managing money and debt

Your previous post stated about the banks money...

Who's money is it exactly? I think you find it is ours and we will be paying it for a good while yet but the banks are asking for more!?! Extortion and theft if you ask me!

And like I said in a previous post... I am going to have to get a dead end job once I have finished uni before I can even use the profession I have trained for as my Student loan repayments will kick in. That's even if I can open another account for something that wasn't my fault.
