Chemical potty/toilet

Options
Ok - such is my faith in MSE members - that I am sure someone will come up with an answer.

Here's my "problem".

My elderly, infirm mum is being discharged from hospital. She will be all but bed ridden for a while-& will be unable to use the stairs to get to the toilet. I have thought about a commode - But I am also wondering about the practicalities of a chemical potty - how to dispose of waste safely.

Does anyone have any ideas?

TIA

I take it you mean the 'caravan' type porta loos,if so the waste can go down the loo in the house.
the main problem is that they are normally pretty low and not very stable,

have you explored the possibilty of hiring a proper 'portaloo'

in most cases, social services will provide a free commode.

    also,
millercare co uk sell commodes for about 60 quid and upwards.
    Get some gorm.

£260 is a lot of money,

the porta potti's can be found on ebay for £30 upwards

but even with the frame they are not very sturdy,

how long to you envisage needing it?

    As ormus posted

quote in most cases, social services will provide

Given a bit of a push , will be surprised that they don't come up with the goods.
When I had to organise equipment last year, was impressed with the help.

Ps the problem comes when you want to return it

Have known people to resort to dumping ( could have put that better ) at the local hospital after letters and phone call promises had been ignored.

social services can supply different types of commodes. if you buy a porta loo would your mum be able to use it? commodes can be different heights they also have arms on the side, making her less likely to fall to the side and also to help her lower herself down and stand up. ask to see a hospital based social worker [if they have one.] they will supply you with all neccesary aids that could help before your mum is discharged
they can also advise of any home care services that might benefit mum and help support/ relieve family of having to do maybe 24 hour care

Talk to the occupational therapist attached to your mum's ward. They will assess her for the most appropriate commode to meet her needs and supply it.

A discharge plan should be drawn up by the hospital before an older person is discharged. This will include supply of commode and anything else assessed as being needed.

I think a word with occupational therapist or social services is the best and first port of call but

    quote

Is certainly a good fall back position :D.
