It's worth paying attention to for the next few days though, because the XP windows anti virus virus (which this sounds very similar too) disables most antivirus and spyware, it runs it so that it all looks fine, and produces nil results, but has actually disabled it.

One of the things that will indicate if it's really gone is whether or not your PC will allow you to download a new antivirus or malware program (legit one from a proper source :)). If you get lots of page error messages, then you've still got the bug.

I have encountered to same problem. Turned on my computer on Saturday to find that I have 43 viruses and to click on Alpha Antivirus to get rid of them.

We haven't clicked on the button but I don't know what to do first to start getting rid of it. Shall I got into Task Manager first to end its process and then run some sort of spyware program?

I should point out that we have Norton 2009 version 2.0 which didn't pick up the virus although Windows Defender did. I asked Defender to quarantine it but it's still there. It said it was something like trojan.win.32.FAKE.xpa.

Grateful for any help on how to get rid of the damn thing!

Follow the instructions that were posted earlier in the thread, if you can't do any of them boot into safe mode and try if you have any problems post back.

Thanks Asininity for your speedy reply. However, I've just tried to turn the computer, (I'm on a different computer at the mo), and it won't even take me to the enter password stage now. It just keeps trying to restart after doing its 'launch repair mode' thingy. It was OK when I turned it on, on Wednesday, but it doesn't want to know tonight.

I have a horrible feeling that this is to do with the virus although I didn't click anything to activate it.

Is there anything else I can do or am I resigned to the fact that I need professional help, (in the form an an independent computer repairer)?
