    http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20to%20Repair%20the%20Boot%20Sector:

How to Repair the Boot Sector:

If XP won't start it may be due to a damaged boot sector or a missing or corrupt ntldr or ntdetect.com files.

To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console (as above). At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files

    COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C:
    COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:

    if not then

To repair a damaged Boot Sector at the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"

but you need an Xp disk for this (or the files on CD from another XP Machine and some form of boot disk))

worked for me in the past , had very simliar problems and only needed to do the first bit :)

as the others posters state, use a Knoppix/linux boot disk to take your stuff off first

You can check the drives are ok on boot.......push F8 on boot and you get a whole list of Windows Options, Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"

    Type the following Command Exactly

    CHKDSK C: /F

Then hit enter, this will run the disk check utility and fix any errors, if it still wont boot then its worth trying an boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com/ and if it still wont work post again. I know a fix that might work with one command but its not somthing I want posted in public view because mucking around with it when you dont know what your doing can seriously damage your day.

what happens is that when i press F8 i get some more options like

    enable boot logging
    enable vga mode
directory services restore mode(windows domain controllers only)
    debugging mode
disable automatic restart on system failure

    reboot
    start windows manually

when i click on safe mode with command prompt it wont let me type in anything..it just restarts

You said you had a new drive 2 months ago? It looks like Windows has finally registered the fact that you're using the wrong type of ide cable.

or there is something wrong with the disk itself. There is some advice here:

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
