Hello all

i recently purchased 2 new mobile phone contracts over the phone with Vodaphone, when they sold me the two £15 per month contracts i got Spend checker with one of them as its for my teenage son - this is how i was sold the contract otherwise its useless to me, anyway to cut a long story short for the past couple of months my sons bill has been over way over the £15 per month that they said and this is because Spendchecker at first was not put on the account as promised. They have now advised me that vodaphone no longer have Spendchecker as it was not accurate as there was up to a 48 hour delay. I have phoned them to try and resolve this but keep on getting told that i need to speak to someone from the resolutions team.

I called them last monday and was told that someone would call me within 48 hours, by wednesday later afternoon i had recieved no call so i called them, the manager i spoke to couldnt put me through to the resolution team as apparantly you have to wait for them to call you. Vodaphone have been kind enough to take off all the extra charges on my bill (but i suspect that is beacuse they were in the wrong) due to Spendchecker not being activated etc but not that they no longer offer this product i no longer want the line I do however want a copy of the recording made when i purchased my phone over the telephone so that they can see that the Spendchecker is waht attracted me to this contract - i only want to cancel one of the contracts as only the contract for my teeange son had spendchecker

Spendchecker was something that Vodaphone controlled so that your mobile phone bill would not get out of hand but they now say it was not accurate so they no longer offer it, in fact it was removed from my account without notifying me of any changes

Now I want to know how valid is a verbal contract, I have asked for a copy of the recording of me purchasing the phones over the phone as i really need them to see that the spendchecker was what attracted me to the deal in the first place and now that it is no longer offered can i get out of my contract :confused:

Hope this makes sense and hope its in the right place

any advice will be greatfully recieved

You cant cancel the contract. They have already offered you compensation. The service Spendchecker (never heard of it till now). If you want to protect your expenditure in future, you can ask vodafone if they have some other mechanism to limit the amount your son spends or maybe the phone you have might have a feature to limit usage.

But as regards cancelling the contract, no chance I think.
  • You aren't clear as to WHO you purchased over the phone from. If it was Vodafone, they are clearly in the habit of giving customers something different than was offered over the phone. I recommend in the first instance that you look up one of the many Vodafone complaints threads and contact their rep on here using the details given there. They at least do appear to make some attempt to sort things out when the company itself has totally failed (commonly!).

I doubt you can cancel as the spend checker would be an optional service, not core to the contract. Much like if you buy a phone contract to check your emails but do it by adding internet data as an optional package. They can retract the optional pack but not the core service of calls/texts.

They may under goodwill cancel the contract or be able to offer another service to keep costs down. T-Mobile Solo Fixed have a set limit which can't be exceeded so im sure Vodafone could do it!

    Hi Fatty,

I can certainly understand your dissatisfaction here but I am pleased to see that a solution has been offered and accepted here in regard to the charges which you weren't expecting to incur.

Although the Spendchecker facility is something which is no longer available from us there are a few ways which will help you to keep an eye on how your son is using his phone.

From his phone you can call 44555 free of charge and select option two for account balance information which will be sent to you via a text message.

Alternatively, you can, if you haven't already, register for our online billing service. To find out more on how to register and how it can benefit you just click here.

Once final way would be to give Customer Services a call via 191 which is also free from your mobile and an adviser will be able to look up this information for you.

    Hope this helps.

  • ok fair enough if u dont have a spendchecker !
what if i do and took the contract with the agreement that the spendchecker kicks in ?
i have this and when it goes over they cut me off, fair enough but firstly u cant even call cus u cant even phone their number!
even though its a freephone number
and then they overcharge me cus of the spendchecker kickin in slow !
prime example was friday, phone locked cant call, use other works mobile, call and told limit is over £5 ,ok got it taken to £10 so i can use it when needs be, have two days left of month till reset , and text to see balance states im actually £22.04 over !
the agreement was £5 and ok id give 3 over at a push but to then allow it to carry on and not even tell me im 22 over is crap!

    Hi spawnmeister

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I am a little confused as to what has happened here, as the spendchecker facility is something that we no longer provide, and that you have been able to exceed a ‘limit’ that has been put in place.

So that I take a closer look at the details, please can you e-mail us here using WRT135 as the subject, and link to this thread? Once we’ve been able to view your account details, we will be in a better position to advise on this for you.

    Kind Regards
