my GP practice is having a nightmare with the jags apparently it comes in batches of 10 and you need to make up the whole batch. Once made up it doesn't last long.

I have a compromised immune system so have been offered the jag along with my husband and 2 kids, they are both under 3 so are in a risk group anyway. I have opted not to the the jag for either me or my kids. Firstly I had swine flu in September and Tamiflu is evil. Secondly I don't believe enough testing has been done. Thirdly my mother in law is a gynecologist and she opted to have it even though she is unsure of the testing and has been ill ever since. Thats almost 12 days now of sickness and dodgy tummy plus aches and pains. Maybe a coincidence but I personally don't feel comfortable with it.

My DS2 has had his first dose (3 weeks ago, he's due back for the second dose on the 2nd). He's 4 with a 'bad chest' (prone to chest infections) due to his CP. He got it at the same time as the seasonal flu jab and he was a few weeks late.

Call them back up and speak to a GP rather than the receptionist.

Its funny reading all the comments about people not taking the jag and there reason is because its not been tested enough, and before i get shouted down this was my reason for not wanting it too,
but having now changed my mind and waiting on my call up, why have i changed my mind, my mum is a practice nurse and is administering these jags, she herself has had t as she must have it coming into contact with patients etc, i said to her 'i dont want it,it hasnt been tested enough' and she promptly put me in my place,
the normal flu vaccine gets tested every year when it is produced, the people that do the testing work mon-fri 9-5 thats it so the testing is done within thopse times, however when the swine flu jag was ordered and put into testing, (the same testing the seasonal flu gets) they worked on it mon-sun 24hrs, so it got the same testing but it was done in a shorter time as they worked outwith 'office hours',
yes some people will react to it, but thats the same with the standard flu jag,
just wanted to clear up some of the urban myths that are spreading with this jag. (and let the barrel load of abuse begin!)

  • I see what you're saying hezza (my sister is a nurse, who has had the jab too) but actually, my reason is that I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion and I don't think my daughter is any more likely to get swine flu than "normal" flu and I don't have her injected for that each year. My 93 year old grandad and his carer, my aunt (65), never have injections against normal flu either. I just don't like the idea of it really, rightly or wrongly!

Edited to add: mind you, my family are not ones for doctors/medicines though, so maybe that's why.

Let's be honest, the doom-merchants grossly over-estimated the effects of Swine Flu (maybe to take our attention away from politics and the massive national debt?). How many people have actually died from Swine Flu over and above the numbers that die from normal flu each year?

was just going to post exactly the same!

I'm the practice manager u may be thinking of but am on mat leave so abit out of the loop atm.

If your daughter is on a list it means the surgery have searched their computer system for people aged between a-b who one of the following conditions c,d,e,f - you still with me?
I would ask what they searched for and why your daughter has shown up - she may have had 'childhood asthma' recorded in her notes. if the surgery r searching for everyone with asthma she will show up, however they SHOULD be searching for people with asthma who have had an inhaler in the last year as this how u find an 'active' asthma patient.

The lists can be wrong - I once sent 3 letters out to people about the MMR - unfortunately I sent it to the ones tha HAD had it the vaccine not those that HADN'T all because I forgot to tick 1 box!

Where does the time go?

the issue is that swine flu is far more contagious and is likely to have a much bigger second peak in the cold weather. it also is associated with more serious outcomes and has a higher risk of serious illness and death than normal flu. trying to plan to avoid a pandemic is not being a doom merchant, it is doing a job to protect the health of the public.

What strain of flu are you talking about? Because swine flu is just a flu with a catchy name. My guess is that if there hadn't been such a media hype about it, it would be in our seasonal flu vaccine this year anyway and nobody would be any the wiser. Who (joe public) actually checks what strains of flu the seasonal flu vaccine is targeted too that year?

Thats cool if thats your reason, some people wont take any of the flu vaccines anyway, and again thats up to them.
I was only saying for those that are using the 'its not been tested enough reason' as its not a true reason.
but the thing with the swine flu vs seasonal flu, far more people die from seasonal flu each year that joe public actually realise(the rough figures are quite shocking), it is far higher than the current death toll of swine flu,but this swine flu is still deadly for those with underlying health concerns, same as the 'normal' seasonal flu.
so each to there own the risks are basically the same.
  • I just don't get why any parent wants to have their child pumped full of chemicals when their own immune system is far better dealing with swine flu anyway.
