MSE News: Bank charges: banks win test case appeal

I made a complaint to my bank about the overdraft charges, and they said they were going to wait for the outcome of the test case before they would reply to me. Should I still log a complaint with the court, now that the fee waiver is lifted?

I don't see that it is a problem if I decide to ask for my money back, why shouldn't I try. Banks make money from being sneaky all the time, so why can't individuals have a go?! (e.g. HBOS and RBS secret bank loans)

It's all a game to them, they have loads of money and constantly cheat the system and will always be trying to find new ways of making more money out of us.

Bank transactions have been 'live' for years, they just dont want you to realise that, and that fact means it is possible to stop you going overdrawn via debit card.

With a live system you take the money from the available ballence at the same time as the purchase is finalised, so no not exactly the same as a ballence check, but the transaction is instantly availabe to your bank to reduce your available ballence, not found a shop with a PDQ that does not for years, but im sure there are some 'odd' ones, but the sytem has been in place for years, so why has it not been perfected yet?

Sorry if you do not understand the logic here, but i do and there is no reason the bank have not made it imposible to go overdrawn via debit card, whell apart from profit that is
Please find out how Mastardcard and Visa work, and how the bank has no control over the transport mechanism for the transaction. Then you'll understand :)

Snap. The news is excellent, it's great to have some positive news (from my viewpoint) in these hard times.

Actually if your a tax payer you are already doing this by you paying off the banks debts and getting nothing in return. Yes we may not be getting charged YET but your still being put over the barrel by a corporate mess. Enjoy that will you.
  • For what it's worth I was not suggesting there should be no charge, I understand a bank is a business and needs to make money. But at the same time the charge needs to be fair and justified.

It't not as if the banks don't make enough from us, in way of interest rates, interest on our money etc.

They also need to assess each case, yes constantly going overdrawn because you want the latest designer clothes, holidays, cars etc, is not right and you shouldn't be able to get away with it.

But as in my case, I have been a customer for over 15 years and have only in the last year incurred these costs due to wage cuts etc (described in my previous post), as a result of the recession - which IMO was largely caused by the banks in the first place.

I like that when they screw up, we as tax payers have to bail them out, but when we get into difficulty, in many cases through no fault of our own, they thank us by taking even more money from us in the form of unfair charges.
  • This is what I've been trying to say all through this thread - don't use direct debits for all your bills. If you use direct debits to pay for your gas (for instance) and your pay cheque is late then you will default on the payment and incur a charge. Alternatively if you don't use direct debits and the gas bill comes in you simply phone the Gas company and tell them that your payment will be delayed and why. No charges and no worries!

The worst that can happen if you can't pay your gas bill is that they put you on a pre-payment meter. If you pay by direct debit, you not only don't pay the gas bill but you also get fined by the bank.

The issue here is to stop using direct debits!!!

I don't use direct debits for utility bills. In fact, I only have 2 direct debits - one is for my pension and the other is for a charity. These are important things to me.

Probably they are just people with different opinions to your own.

Really? If you mean abusive and ignorant, then yes, they certainly are. This board is usually quite supportive. As you'd know if you had ever posted more than 20 odd times. Bye.
  • Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Managed to earn £7000+ charging my friends 20% for getting their money back.Had another £22000 commission on hold, lost that now, lifes a !!!!!!!. Anyway back to credit cards and ppi insurance still a good earner.

The treasury minister just said on the news that thats the end to trying to make retrospective claims for charges, that theres no other avenues open.

So those of you clutching at straws should just accept it.
