I just love the comment made by the British Bankers Association, found here
w w w.bba.org.uk/bba/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=145&a=16922
"The Banks acknowledge the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court to allow their appeal in respect of these charges. We recognise this issue has been of real concern to a large number of our customers and we are pleased that this decision now brings clarity for all parties.
The Banks will work with the regulators to ensure that the outstanding customer complaints are brought to a swift conclusion."
Love that last sentance, essentially..."Your complaint letter sir/madam, I think you will find that you can go screw yourself. We now consider the matter closed"
Can't wait for the nicest "get f*cked" letter off my banks!0 -
they would get it one way or anotherDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

I'm obviously in the minority here but I'm glad of this decision.
No-one will win - if the banks lost they would just end free banking and we'd ALL have to pay for it.
As someone who hasn't paid a bank charge since being at uni in the 90's, I'm more than happy with my bank
If you go overdrawn without permission, you pay the fine! Simple!
Sorry - don't shout at me! I'm a big Martin Lewis fan but have always been against this campaign.
So am I. If the OFT had won I'm sure we would have seen the end of free banking for all just because some !!!!less people can't manage their finances.
Putting on my best Yorkshire accent, I've had to pay one of these charges years ago and it did me good!"One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -
This is such a shocking decision for a number of reasons. C_Mabebejive, picture this scenario you get £120 every 2 weeks for job seeker's allowance, something happens requiring you to spend a large chunk of your money and your account goes £10 overdrawn, the bank will charge £35 for this so you now have £45 coming out of the next payment of £120 going in. This becomes a cycle that the banks are now allowed to perpetuate. As someone who has had a hardship claim unfairly put on hold by their bank prior to the test case I am absolutely furious with this decision. What a good thing we have this new judicial body to protect the public interest eh? I bet they all have financial interests in the banks that would be affected, or at least they do now if they didn't before the case (if you know what i mean).0

this is typical!! The banks are a total waste of time these days, the service is terrible and all they are intrested inn is earning money from the working class. Not only did we bail the them out with our tax payers money we also get shafted by them, this country has gone to the dogs and it's about time the goverment done something about this0

I am truly amazed that the Supreme Court have reversed this decision... what a sad day for the realms of so-called "Justice". I for one am not going to let this detract from the real reason we are fighting, let's keep the momentum & wait for the judgment to be scrutinised as Martin said, we may have lost the battle......LBM 2006: £17,000 P.Loan

Now that the courts have ruled in the bank's favour, stand by for us little people being screwed over even more. How long will it be before they all start charging a monthly fee for the priviledge of having a bank account - regardless of how much you pay in each month? They're not going to keep on processing our cheques, DD's etc for nothing...
In the end they will win because they're big and powerful and the government will bail them out whenever they get themselves into trouble because they (banks) know we can't operate without them. The payments system was created by the banks for the banks. If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -
anyone else feel this is lob-sided? how can they rule similar charges on credit cards are unfair yet overdraft charges arent?
the government themselves have even condemned them so is it time for them to step in? Surely at least they can order the state-owned banks to pay up?Debts at LBM (May '08) £5760 - Lloyds CC £4260, Lloyds OD £1500;Debts as of May 28th 2011:Santander CC: £0.00Lloyds OD : £0.00DFW Nerd #1247 - Proudly dealt with my DebtsOlympic 2012 Challenge #12

So the fatcat legal profession and politicians have decided fatcat banks are entitled to keep their hands in our pockets and take whatever they fancy....what a surprise!
I am so disgusted with the whole perverse system I would love to live by cash but I'm not allowed to have a job without a bank account!0 -
Credit card charges?
Will this affect my claiming charges on credit cards?
Thanks0
