how to stop a neighbours cat from coming in

hi all, quick run through, we have two rescue cats of our own which we got at different times and have had one for about 2 yrs and one for around a year, took a few weeks to get them completely used to each oter with a bit of hard work. one was fro a rescue and one a neighbour moved and just left her to fend for herself, dont think she was allowed in much when they did live there.(notvery nice people)
anyway they get on great now and are really happy but over the past week we have had this huge (in comparison) black and white cat keep coming in throught their catflap and eating the food and sleeping in the back room, now its a really lovely cat and i dont mind really but its not my cat, i havent fount out whos it is yet as i dont know all the neighbours but will knock on a few more doors at the weekend. the thing is my cats are not keen on it coming, they dont attack they just run off over to me or hiss at it if it walks past or goes to their bowl when they are eating.
how do i discourage it from coming in for now.
i know the owner cant do much but i just want them to know it is safe as it is in my house an awful lot.

Careful, if your cats are feeling threatened by its presence in the house they could get stressed and start spraying. You could start by just picking the cat up and putting it back outside if it will allow you to. If you really want to discourage it you could try hissing at it. If you think it's a visitor you could put a paper collar on it asking the "owner" to contact you so you know whether it's a stray or not. If it's visiting for food and a kip you could consider leaving some food and a bit of shelter for it outside, so it won't need to come in. Can you lock the catflap?0

thanks for the reply, my cats arent too bad with it but they dont want it in they just ignore it mostly unless it goes near them then they hiss and it just sits down and watches them or walks off. i have been putting it outside a lot for the first few days and then we sort of hissed at it and shooed it out for a few days but it doesnt seem bothered just comes up to us for a stroke and cuddle lol,
we did lock the catflap of a night when ours was in but it just kinda knocks to come in, spent twenty mins listening to it the other night at 3 in the morning before giving in and unlocking the catflap because it was chucking it down with rain and really windy.
there is loads of shelter down our street as well as the childrens playhouse in the garden (but i dont want to encourage animals in there, theres also quite a few cats and the nieghbours leave food out often i think they all just eat out of each others bowels .
the paper collar is a good idea, i do have a spare proper collar but dont want to offend anyone by putting it on the cat,
i think to be honest its indoors most of the day as well cause its generally here when we come home.
was thinking about getting one of those catflaps with collars for only our cats to get in but will have to wait till payday.
we had a similar problem a yr or so ago with a kitten down the street but i knew where it belonged and after a few days of shooing it ut it never came in again but it still waits near our catflap sometimes just to play i thinknow proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0 -
Seems like all neighbouring cats love your house. I would def put a collar on the cat notifying the owner (if there is one) of the situation. You can try a magnetic catflap as you said but have read they are not always effective and cat if strong enough can force its way through it. Also it won't stop it knocking on yr door demanding you let it in at 3am. We had a cat that was going to neighbours' houses where he was attacking their cats. He was extremely territorial and neighbours demanded I stopped his behaviour... The bottom line is you can't stop their behaviour from my experience. In the end had to give him to our friends to stop my neighbours from hurting him. YOu can try spraying it with water but I have read somewhere that it stops being effective if the cat learns that the water only comes out when you are around. So if it doesn't see you than he'll know there is no danger of getting soaked. I guess chasing it away every time you see it is your best option. Else it looks like he has already adopted you.0

I don't think the cats owners would be offended if it came home with a strange collar on it asking them to get in touch. It just says that you're an animal lover wanting to solve the problem.
They'd be more annoyed if you stopped their pet from coming into your garden by using an air rifle or house brick.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

We had the same problem a while ago and Lily got so upset and stressed by the intruder that she started peeing in the house.
I personally don't like collars on cats so the only way for us to make her feel safe again was to get her chipped and buy a PetPorte microchip cat flap.
It was pricey at £100 but honestly it's worth every penny to see her relaxed and happy again.
I bought mine from petplanet.co.uk and I noticed recently they have the second generation (better version than mine) flap on sale for £85.

I think you now have 3 cats :rotfl:
I've gained 2 that way, and the 3rd moved in on my uncle one day despite him hating cats...and when he died...strolled over the road to live with me (much to the annoyance of my 2 boys)....never even looked at his old house since.
things could be worse...you could have this every day in every doorway :-
..
Cat's choose humans...you know that right ? :rotfl:

lol thaks guys/girls for all your replys, i hoestly dont mind him being here (actually havent checked which sex it is yet) mine are speyed anyway. i just dont like to think of someone else looking for him and being upset, i just want them to know he is safe, came in this evening from work and he is still here but just gone out now for a wonder, have let several of the neighbours know there is a stray cat here incase anyone asks around during the day and im not here. will take him to the ets at the weekend and see if he is chipped.
thanks golden eagle, i think he would just break through eventually he bangs so hard when i have locked our one.
morg monster....... bowls i meant bowls honest
thanks sailor sam and shelly i guess your right the owners wont be annoyed if i put a note on a collar asking to get in touch. i use them safety clip collars that have quick release as i need my cats to wear a bell or they are forever bringing in birds and mice etc they are also chiped though
timmers i fear you may be right a 3rd cat has adopted us, hopefully he will be re united with his owners but if not there is a bed here for him,
do you people know if theres anywhere i can search onine incase anyone has posted him missingnow proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0 -
