  • Hi all,

Can anybody point me in the right direction for insurance for a from home baking business. I'm not sure if I need product and public liability insurance or just one of them.

Any company recommendations would be great.

    Thanks,

    George
  • We want to hire and re-let car parking spaces.
For example from a sports centre that has excess parking spaces.
(a)If the sports centre has building insurance(which would include the car park)does there insurance only cover them for personal use or does this insurance also cover them for earning money from spare spaces(letting them to a third party)or would they need to notify their insurers if they wanted to make an income from the excess spaces.
(b)If we have public liability and are given permission by the sports centre to re-let their spaces they have hired to us
Is the onus on the sports centre to make sure they have the right insurance in place before agreeing to let the spaces to us or is it our responsibility to make sure they have the right insurance in place before we re- let the spaces to our customers
    Or
Put another way round if the sports centre does not have the right insurance in place and something happens to one of our customers that should be covered by the office blocks insurance can we be made liable for the incident
(c)If we draw up an agreement for the sports centre to sign stating it is the it is the sports centre responsibility to make sure they have the right insurance in place does this leave us in the clear-if they have it or not.
    Or
If we take on excess spaces clearly stating we are acting as agents for the sports centre only does this put us in the clear.

    Thank You for your help

The only way to be sure, would be to ask the questions (and get the answers in writing).

    However,

    a) I'm not sure buildings insurance would cover the car park, in the same way that my home buildings insurance doesn't cover my garden, AFAIK.

I'd expect the buildings insurance to kick in if part of the building fell into the car park, but not if someone tripped in a pot hole, so it's not entirely straightforward.

I'd expect them to check with their insurers, in any event.

    b) The Sports Centre will have public liability insurance and employers liability insurance which I'd expect to cover accidents in the car park, but I'm not sure if it would extend to you hiring parking spaces out. And I'd say you should each check your respective liabilities.

    c) I'd be surprised if you could get the Sports Centre to sign such an undertaking ...
Signature removed for peace of mind

I am unable to find a suitable insurance company to cover my new business venture as a home help provider. I can see cleaning and housekeeper insurance everywhere but I want to cover other areas, such as shopping, light meal prep, chaperoning etc, can anyone advise me where to go? theres just me at the minute but I may sometime in the future want to contract people on a self-employed basis, so it would need to be flexible.

Try googling along the lines of "Domestic Personal Assistant Liability Insurance"

Brokers such as Ellis Bates can probably provide a quotation.

You will need Public Liability which covers injuries and damage you do.

Also consider taking out Professional Indemnity Insurance which covers errors you make.

Please make sure you are familiar with any exclusions as for instance it may not cover you for damage to the item you are cleaning or ironing etc
  • Hi,

I am also setting up as a Home Help Companion but also offering a Dog Walking Pet Visiting service, would it be possible to get PL insurance to cover both aspects of the job? And if so where is the best/cheapest place to get cover. I am new to Sole Trading and really need some advice. Are there any specific questions I need to ask?

    Many Thanks
  • Grateful for the three comparison links for business insurance.

Found out from contacting them the other day, and feel it may assist people to know, that simplybusiness and moneysupermarket both apply the same underwriting criteria, meaning that identical quotes will be obtained from each of these.

    Hope this proves helpful.
